I would use light/white colored furniture, but this might not be practical. For more person/animal/kid friendly ideas, try some mirrors with white frames on walls that seem dark/shadowy, and maybe some pops of color sprinkled throughout the room (think: coral, yellow, orange, more white, or silver). Especially keeping the window treatments white will help! I would try either structured bright white Roman shades or white flowing curtains that go from ceiling to floor.
