I make hummus in my Vitamix. Takes about 2 minutes, and it's pretty smooth, even without removing the skins.

I use mine for beans and rice all the time. It's especially good since I live at nearly 6,000 above sea level, and you can simmer beans all day long and they will still be crunchy!

We are just finishing a DIY Ikea kitchen renovation. I couldn't agree more with previous comments that you need to plan for plenty of power outlets. I kind of wish now that we had used plug mold under our upper cabinets, instead of having multiple outlets on the backsplash.

Don't forget to plan for all kinds of lighting, too - undercabinet lighting is essential in our kitchen, since it doesn't get a lot of natural light.

Also think about your range hood/microwave. A microwave/range hood just doesn't cut it if you have a gas range. We ended up hiding the microwave in a tall cabinet so that it isn't on display, and its one of my favorite features.

We have an adobe (mud brick) house with lots of wood everywhere. The first thing we did was have all the wood sandblasted. I love the effect, but be warned - it is messy and sand will get everywhere! I would go with a creamy white on the walls to provide lots of contrast to the wood and lighten things up, and add accent colors with art and accessories. Here is a picture to give you an idea of what we did - ignore the mess, as it is mid-kitchen renovation.

I drive past this all the time! You can't tell from these pictures, but there is an overpass right next to the left-hand property line. Not where I would probably choose to build my castle, but I guess urban renewal can happen in all kinds of ways.

I don't have room for a bedside table next to my side of the bed since it would block access to the Ikea wardrobe taking up that entire wall. My solution was to buy an inexpensive tray from Target and glue casters to the bottom of the tray. It keeps my book, glasses, lip balm and other assorted stuff close at hand without taking up floor space, and rolls neatly under the bed when I'm done.

There are a lot of water thrifty, low maintenance plants that can be used to replace grass without having a yard that ends up looking like the surface of the moon. I have a pea gravel driveway and hate it - lots of weeds and the gravel moves all over the place. Replacing it with crushed gravel is next on my landscaping to do list.

Just a thought - my husband and I put dark wood floors in our loft a year and a half ago, and it has not worn very well, despite the fact that it is a low traffic area. There are several areas in which the wear and tear is pretty obvious.

Sorry, but it makes me think of cutesy "country" decorating schemes involving painted duck figurines and heart-shaped wall decorations. Not the look you're going for, I'm sure.

It reminds me of a kiva fireplace. I'd get rid of everything on the mantel except perhaps a row of votive candles, hang a colorful carving over the top, and let it speak for itself.

I agree with everyone else who recommends painting or refacing the cabinets and changing the hardware, but why not incorporate some color? The style of your cabinets reminds me of this kitchen featured in Sunset:

The backsplash tile is nice, but just looks out of place. You could just cover it with Fastbo wall panels from Ikea, if replacing it is out of the question for now.

I had a croquembouche at my wedding, in addition to the main cake. Layered with fresh strawberries, it was gorgeous! Sadly, I was too busy with guests to actually taste it!

I love those metal sconces in the bathroom, and was thinking about doing something similar in mine, but I'm worried that the light won't be good enough to do my makeup, put in my contacts, etc. In short, is this practical for anything other than a guest bathroom? Anyone have any thoughts?

We painted the cabinets white in our last house after the previous owner had painted them black(!), and although I loved how it turned out, chipping was an issue over the long term. Just something to keep in mind.

I have one from Lowe's in the garage. Very sturdy, cost about $60.

This is a great question which I can't wait to find the answer to! We live in an older adobe house just outside Albuquerque and it gets COLD here in the winter! Not too thrilled about the idea of entirely replastering, either.
