The (beautiful, pricey) Eames chair DISTRACTS attention from the (cheap) sofa.

The cheap sofa DETRACTS (subtracts from) from the Eames chair.

So the correct word was DISTRACTS.

The English language is full of traps...

Why is it that, even with such a view (!!), the whole LR is centered around a TV screen? Not just here, but 90% of LRs… Do people never have friends over and TALK? The seating is not set up for that, nor for reading. Just commenting…

I actually like the current color. But I would consider moving the TV to the corner to the L of the view, and moving the couch 90º to face the view and possible visitor in the white chair. Hard to tell without a floor plan, but the TV is too much the focus of the room, rather than the people living there!

Also, it is perfectly possible to watch TV from a sofa not facing it directly - stretched out, feet up!

I'm with Mirandabee on this one: in 40 years (or likely only 10) OUR places will look not just as funny, but even funnier, even more out of date. (Of course, not MINE! - just jokin').

To point: my parents bought new furniture from Hermann Miller in the early 50's, mixing it with beautiful inherited pieces. It was hot. Then in the 70's and 80's it was NOT AT ALL HOT. Now it is RED-HOT. As in, eat your heart out, and it is NOT for sale on ebay. They still love it, and the prices surely worked out cheaper than re-doing, even at Ikea every 5 years.

If caminante's method doesn't work, I would do the following:

1) Fix up your bedroom to be your sanctuary
2) Collect photos and ideas for an eventual place of your own (a style file), and
3) Save save save, so this will be as temporary as possible!

Good luck!

Aside from the black-haired-dog issue, I would go for a creamy-colored rug with some texture (I am tempted to say shag rug, but as I already survived the '70's once…) which would make a soft textural contrast to the masculine furniture. However, the furniture is FABULOUS, so keep your guy happy and don't toss it! Just add something a little cozy underneath - large enough to fit under the entire grouping in the photo - and it will look very, very sharp!

Just my 2 cents…
(As for the dog, brush him, vacuum the rug… don't sweat it -anyway, she'll probably prefer the black sofa!)

Not into the speed or "staging" part of this. Tidying up is always worthwhile, and - alas - not speedy.

Much prefer the slow pleasures of watching a home, not a stage, develop…

BTW, in photo #5, the white Eames chair (LCW) has the back piece put on upside down! Is this a badly-done knock-off, or a badly put together "real thing"??

No credits so don't know where the photo is from…

Another vote for white brick - I have seen it, and remembered it fondly, in another 50's CA house - always, always loved it. Very fresh. And then I'd put a light-to-medium gray rug on the floor - yes, to lighten up the whole thing. Just my 2 cents… (The painting/poster on the brick wall, as well as the furniture, will look much better, too - very nice stuff, a bit hidden at the moment).

Eh. Nice set. Very trendy, blah blah blah (shabby chic in a "multi-million dollar home" to quote the owners - huh??!).

Bet they're putting it on the market soon; with such an oversized place, good luck. I think they are using AT for a sales tool… Give me "small cool" any day… sorry…

Umm… so, where's the 2nd arm?? I don't see it…

Well, to be honest, these are all a bit stiff and static. Very designer-y. The seating is mostly rather wide-set, as if you don't really want to be THAT close to the others. Or could it be that these LR's are not really used that much?

Beautiful to look at; wonder how they really work. Anyone else feel this way?

LovelyDarkandDeep - THANK YOU! Just came checking to see if there was an answer about the whites! The link is very useful, indeed; just printed it to have on hand.

The BM Super White sounds like just what I want. Guess I'll have to pack a small can in my bag next trip to USA! (And then try to match it here with another brand - wish me luck…). Thanks again!

There's nothing like giving a bottle of wine - save (stylishly, of course), drink, re-gift … no prob.

Around here, this is the norm, and what a blessing. I mean, I love dogs, but DANG!

Beautiful bones on this house. Leave it white and black, and put in a glossy red door, as others have said. Very classic, very chic.

I'd remove the over-the-door planters entirely; they distract from the elegance of the façade.
