My husband and I have been in SF for over 2 years (3 for him) and we are counting down the days until we can leave and live somewhere more affordable. We both have good jobs where our salaries would take us further anywhere else but it's hard to enjoy ourselves where we're paying $2,300 in rent for a 1 bedroom out in the Richmond district (further out from downtown SF).

I'm hoping the tech bubble will burst soon and things will settle down a bit. And/or we'll move out to the East Bay where it's more livable (and sunny!).

It's so versatile! You can make soups with it. I always add a dollop to stir-fries to give it that rounded sweet and spicy taste.

Make a marinade for meats (chicken, pork, beef, fish) or tofu. Add it as a condiment to burgers or Korean-inspired tacos. And yes, you can totally use it as a dip with cucumbers, carrots, peppers or lettuce.

I love dairy of all kinds but I am a huge fan of the Almond Milk from Trader Joes (Original flavor in the red carton). I always get 2 when I'm at the store.
It tastes amazing in cereal and oatmeal, makes a mean hot chocolate and is very tasty with coffee (my favorite Blue Bottle coffee Bella Donovan + almond milk = perfection).

I went with Heath Ceramics (Coupe line) for my registry (pricey stuff I'd never splurge on but absolutely lovely to receive as gifts) and it's served us VERY well for the last 2+ years. Sure it's heavier than Corelle (I have a hand-me-down set I use for cooking and prep and extra plates).

But no breakages, super durable, an absolutely classic design and everything looks gorgeous on it. They look great as display pieces or on open shelving. And they'll last a really long time!

Not sure why that picture of the bread covered in a tea towel / dish towel was included (except that it's pretty).

I've tried the wrapping it up with a tea towel method after reading about it on TheKitchn and sadly, it did not work out and left the whole loaf super stale and dry.

Definitely best to experiment a bit. I put my bread in one of those huge Ziplocs and either leave it out on the counter (if consumed within a couple of days) or into the fridge it goes where it usually stays pretty happy! When I've got too much bread happening, it goes in the freezer in a big Ziploc and a day before eating, I let it out to thaw and if you give it a quick warm up in an oven, it's as good as new.

Totally with you on the "nom". I have never heard anybody actually make a noise like that when eating.

I've got a couple of chefs mats (ugly) that are covered by rag rugs in the kitchen. They bring a nice cheerful punch of color and definitely make the room feel homey. Stains and spills don't show up as much and they're really easy to clean! Just throw them in the washing machine. LOVE THEM.

I was a regular vendor at the Sunday Marin Civic Center Farmers Market in San Rafael (apparently the 3rd largest farmers market in the US) most of last year and now step in from time to time as a sub farmers market gal for the Bay Area markets. During the week, I have a regular 9-5 desk job but I work at the farmers market for fun and the experience.
It's really fun to meet and interact with all kinds of people and share great products and ideas with them.

Other tips:
• Get in line and wait your turn.
• Be respectful to the farmers and vendors! Don't be pushy or rude. I definitely had folks who acted like I was a lowly nobody and have been barked.

Being nice like saying please and thank you goes a long way!

@Betheib There are a few different kinds of miso: White, Yellow, Red, Black. It just depends on what the soybeans are fermented with and how long it's been fermented, which result in different colors and tastes.
There's a Kitchn article about this: http://www.thekitchn.com/whats-the-difference-white-yel-79637

My mom always had a few different kinds of hand and combined them to make the best miso soup!

Same problem with the gelatin. I'm making this right now and the gelatin (never baked with it before!) is a big rubbery clump and I'm opting to not put it in the yogurt mixture.

Scoutmob is great. I've definitely used some of their nearby deals for lunch. And no need to pre-purchase anything!

Yes oh yes, casseroles are such an easy and perfect dinner.

Tonight I made a pasta bake of penne with some leftover tomato mushroom sauce with some mozzarella and parmesan cheese thrown in. Add garlic bread and it's a delicious dinner.. with leftovers for tomorrow!

I've learned of the simplest way to enjoy fennel from my mom-in-law. She slices the bulb thinly, going up a couple of inches into the stalk. Toss with a bit of sea salt and squeeze a lemon. Voila! A fresh and crunchy side dish to go with dinner.
