I would label that as a safety hazard. I personally would rather find something similar if possible that is actually a ceiling medallion. The mirror shown was designed to be hung vertically on a wall.
If you decide to go this route, DEFINITELY secure it as best as possible to the ceiling joist.

Definitely have to do the trim first. Trim, corners and ceiling border. All the tight spots. I learned this when my friend who is a profession painter came over to help me out.

I am also a designer. I also have an extensive library. I am very pleased with my Cubitec (as shown above) shelves.

The reasons being:
1) is incredibly strong "Each Cubitec shelf space supports up to 55 lbs"
2) you can customize it to any size. Since I have 10' high ceilings, this worked well with filling up that height. Makes the space look MUCH taller
3) When I move, I can customize it to accomodate the next space. It will also work well as a space divider.

I was watching a show about lifestyles in Denmark and it was stated that the home (which was quite beautiful, modern, and space efficient - i.e. smallish but just enough for 2 children) did not really have a lot of clutter such as tvs, sounds systems, objects, etc in there. And the homeowner said that she noticed that Americans tend to collect a lot of "stuff" because of our consumer society. I thought that there was something that smacks of truth in there.

kind if gimmicky

Its a bit too Goth fru fru for me. I guess since I also design our home to include my husband's masculine tastes, I am aware of what's too feminine.

try looking into Soygel. Its a nontoxic paint stripper which was the ONLY stuff that actually got off the paint off an antique chandelier I was working on. PLUS I didnt need a gas mask. Its popular with stripping wood floors as well.
