I used to organize my 3 floor to ceiling shelves full of cookbooks alphabetically by how I remembered them. By title if it was a classic like Joy of Cooking, by author if that's how I know it (Nigella's, for instance) or by country. That's how I found out I have a LOT of Indian cookbooks and many many Jewish ones.

Now I'm stuck with organizing by size due to the new bookshelf arrangement I needed to make in my new place. I can't find anything that way. But my cooking is more interesting because I never know what I'm going to find

Frankly- tell Mt Diablo I miss him! And look out for tarantulas. ( I only admired him from afar while driving to and from work) Your picnic sounds fantastic!

And Kitchen Imp- I might make a roasted selection of golden beets and whatever else I can find at the FINALLY opened Farmer's Market. (it just quit snowing)

Sweet sweet place! I'm in St Paul and I bet I know the "swanky" neighborhood with old buildings that are walking distance to small businesses and restaurants. I've always wondered what the apts in those grande old buildings were like.( If you're where I think you are, you'll get my hidden hint back there)

Is it really noisy there? I've always wondered that too.

Just so you know, I tried to "favorite" this many times and it won't take my vote. So whatever your final number is...add one. I love your place!

You had me at "my neighbors and I got together". That's so hard to manage these days and I'm hoping some of the concierge initiated gatherings in my high rise turn into regular things. We're all very friendly in the elevator and laundry room, but then the walls go up.

This Greek likes Fage. Fat free, fat full....it's almost, but not quite, as good as my mother makes.

I grew up with homemade Greek yogurt and when "yogurt" was finally available in the stores, I was so excited....but it seemed like milk jello to me.

Ideal Kitty Litter for Apartment Dwellers? Good Questions

My cats thought that the World's Best litter was the World's Worst. They made it clear to me by doing their business JUST outside the box.

But they are old and obese and I found one for senior cats that doesn't stick to places they have trouble reaching to clean....if you catch my drift. It doesn't clump into hard clumps, but the best part is that it doesn't smell. (when they remember to cover)

Scooping daily, sometimes more than once, is the key to odor control in an apartment.

and maybe a bit of incense....

And this is why I'll NEVER have all open shelving in my kitchen. I do have some that are neat and pretty, but mostly the inside of the cupboards look like this. Or worse

OH how I love this idea. As a nurse, a "weekend" means I have 2 days off in a row, so they can come anytime. I might use the twinkly light signal for myself since usually I'm at work at night, but on my days off I'm often up til at least 2. It would feel more festive to paint and read with twinkly lights around my windows.

more cooking for ONE! And not just cauldrons of soup or giant pans of lasagna etc. that can be frozen. Apartment fridge freezer compartments fill up fast.

Making things in 2 serving sizes are great for single life, since they leave just enough leftovers for lunch on another day...but not for a week's worth of lunches.

Simply cutting some kinds of recipes in half doesn't always work, so if a big recipe CAN be cut down to 2-3 servings, please add that comment if possible.

I just saw this on a Bob Newhart rerun. It was in their bedroom and I laughed my head offf. But with all things retro coming into style, I should've expected that a buckled bureau would appear someday.

Will we be wearing Carol's ugly shirts next? I'd rather wear Suzzane Pleshett's long skirts. Especially the green velvet she had on in last night's rerun.

But I digress.

Sugar. I'll be adding the sugar. Probably add it on top of each of my servings. (I like the crunch)

I was snowed in, so I went shopping in my pantry. Found a box of organic broccoli soup and doctored it up with steamed broccoli, noodles and a bit of Manchego cheese sprinkled on top. it was a perfectly wonderful warm winter/spring soup.

I've extended my kitchen into the living area more than once. I have a china cabinet from my mother, and of course that's a lovely high end piece of furniture. But I've also used a 3 drawer IKEA "kitchen island" that gave me 2 shelves below and a lovely counter top for prep work or more storage.

Nothing wrong with putting pretty bowls on bookshelves either, if you dont' need them on a daily basis.

OH how I wanted a Berkeley bungalow, but I know I could never do it justice the way you did. Everything was perfect, and I think my favorite comment in the interview was "Little did I know that animals with black hair and couches with white upholstery are incompatible."
As a human companion to two black AND white cats, I'm learning that lesson times two.

I moved around every 3 months as a travel nurse, and it was finding PEOPLE that made me feel at home no matter how short the time was. I used Meetup.com to find movie and dinner and hiking groups since that's an instant group to join. I also looked for the Jewish community, the gay community, and any kind of dance community (especially folkdancers). Somewhere in there I could find the casual potlucks that makes this midwesterner's heart feel at home.

Now that I'm actually settled in a city, It's establishing routine places to go outside to see wildlife and water, to to grocery shopping, to sit and read while drinking coffee and people watching, and finding the right fit for me in those subculture comunities that sustain me.

What Makes You Feel at Home in a
New City?

4/15/13 6:43 PM

Yes yes yes! I once moved just 10 miles up the road to a fantastic apartment with 15 windows and a view of trees and ponds out of all of them.

When I moved to another city, to an apt sign unseen, I loved the area, but after a year I moved across the street and up 10 floors to achieve quiet and a view like none I even expected. The building, managed by the same company, also has a long long list of perks I never expected. I feel like I live in a luxury hotel.

And did I mention QUIET?? and the VIEW? I hope I don't have to move again for years, though. I have a lot of books....
