I grew up an hour's drive away from chicago, so I had the comfort of small town life, but with the benefit and proximity to big city life nearby. I loved it. So much so, that now I live exactly one block away from where I grew up. If I'm sitting in my living room in just the right position I can see my parent's front porch through the gap between houses.

If you are interested in miniatures, the Tom Bishop shows are always a great source for collecting AND inspiration. http://www.bishopshow.com/ I think they are the largest miniatures show and it's in the chicagoland area

My sister has a picnic blanket with an opened trash bag duct taped to the back. She's had it for years and the tape has yet to separate from blanket or plastic. She keeps it in the trunk of her car so she can easily grab it when needed. It's perfect because you can just spread out one layer and it's kept our bums dry on many occasions.
