I like wrenagain's washer idea. I think I'll do that next time I decide I need to sort clothes.

When I was a clothes-hoarder in college I bought orange hangers that were on sale at the dollar store and put the items I couldn't remember wearing in the past few months onto the ugly orange hangers. As I used clothing on those hangers, they went back to regular hangers. When I moved, everything on orange went to a local charity.

All the ideas of stuffing something up the chimney scare me a bit, especially since it was retrofitted for gas.

Two pieces of advice from all the comments that make the most sense to me:

A> Talk with landlord about fixing the issue.
B> A clear cover, either high-melting temp acrylic/plexi or a piece of plate glass.

I am so doing this as a DIY project. Great idea!

My husband is adamant that his clothes be dried with dryer sheets for the scent (we both have quirks about clothing smells after a stint in Iraq).

Does anyone have all-natural ideas for scents in the dryer?

It still looks cheap and haphazard.

I've used marbles around plants indoors in the past. If you regularly water plants in your landscaping with municipal water, you may notice a film of mineral deposits form on the marbles.

I'm jealous of the stone house. Reminds me a bit of the townhouse with exposed brick I rented when I was in college.

Does the fireplace work? I noticed the table in front of it.

You've got a good start on things. Everyone above seems to be giving advice, I think it just takes some experimenting with arrangements to figure out what will work.

Chocolate cake mix in the oranges might be a nice dessert to make next time we have company.
Maybe I'll experiment this weekend.
