Win: Chesterfield Sofa by Canvas Holiday Giveaway

I was expecting something wonderful from the first photo of the front of the house (love that color combo, although the landscaping killed it a bit for me), and while there are a few nice things going on, photo after photo was just a disappointment. This once beautiful house has had nearly all the character scrubbed from it.

Should I Trade My New Sofa for a Used Vintage One? Good Questions
4/10/12 6:31 PM

mslewis: thanks for the *constructive* criticism. we try to stick to new where it matters...mattresses, toilet paper, and toothbrushes...but who knows...maybe i'll broaden my horizons someday...possibly new bedsheets or one of those trendy lamps from Target, via Goodwill of course! ;)

Teigi: ha, well, you were probably eyeing it in my shop, HappyGoVintage. I had a few to sell, but kept one for myself! If I run across any others, I'll put them in the shop!

a.hidden.bird: I got it at an antique shop here in STL....a bit of a splurge, but still under $20 (!), I had to have it for the colors...and the kindness!...haven't had time to paint the frame yet. I think Mandi (old AT contributor) of the blog 'Here's Lookin at Me Kid' has the same one in her kitchen!

foxymardy: the key is to collect stuff you love *before* meeting the boy....then he doesn't have as much chance to veto the stuff you love...he's just stuck with it! j/k...sorta! ;)

jettsam: yes, somehow it seems more "right side up" to me like that....if it were closer to the floor, I'd flip it over! Plus, it works better aesthetically--more balanced--with the bookshelf on top of my refrigerator (not pictured) which is just across from it!

everyone else: thanks so much for all the super sweet comments!

ArtsyGirl: it's an old typeset drawer. I used to have mine filled to the brim with "curiosities"...but then started over once I moved. I've seen people fill each rectangle with different patterned papers/photographs for a less cluttery look. Painting some of the boxes might be fun too.

Mr. Modtomic: Yes, those are in fact Club pots...but fortunately, I scored the whole set at once...for something like $25 at a garage sale from a woman who received them as a wedding gift 40 years before and had taken good care of them! And did you notice that glass on my counter in photo 15. It's a teal pinecone glass!

postfacto: glad you like...there's also a framed rock that's the shape of Indiana...one of my favorite things in the whole house...not pictured..but see it here: http://tinyurl.com/3rcvm2w

Thanks for all the nice comments, everyone!

cozyurbanhome: the dining room wall color is Valspar (from Lowe's) #MS021 "Pinniped" (I believe it's a Martha Stewart brand...)

but he's such an adorable puppy! :) i think i'd rather have a puppy on my counter than the impracticality of that (pink?) kitchenaid all the way up on the 2nd shelf...with no ladder in site. and those suckers are HEAVY!

Bravo, Elizabeth and family!! Your house is absolutely amazing. What a wonderful gift to your kids and to anyone lucky enough to be your houseguest! I am terribly sad for anyone who doesn't enjoy and/or can't even *appreciate* this home!

really nice (as though this hasn't been said..)! spaces with this much white usually make me uneasy (the color mash-up in my entry is proof!), but you pull it off well...and i am soooo loving that couch!! (and the cute little green wire stand on your island! where'd you find it?)

Thanks so much, everyone!

Sorry for no photos of the kitchen...the light was just not cooperating with me this time around! (but if you check out my entry from *Small, Cool 2010*, there's a kichen shot there, including the cabinets!) And, juliboolie: check out this AT post for a redo of similar old cabinets...it's AMAZING!

As for the dining room curtains, they are one of my favorite thrift store finds ever--$3.99 each, i think--they had horrible pleating, so i reworked them. Photos/instructions are here: http://happy-go-vintage.blogspot.com/2010/02/once-upon-grimey-thirfting-trip.html

your colors are great and mad props on the decluttering/editting (i'm in the middle of that oh-so-fun process)...but be careful not to edit out all of your personality. i'd love to see your space with a few switch-outs of furniture for some more interesting pieces...and maybe it's just a preference, but i'd rather see a slightly more "filled" space that was interesting, than one that was only memorable for how "clean" it was...right now you've got a lot of empty wall goin on! (but maybe that's just b/c you're renting...)
