Loora - I love the apple pie test for the kitchen set up.

Getting Organized: The Big Picture

Lots of women wear dresses outside of beach vacations. They fit in almost anywhere you go and you can dress them up on down. I'm not talking about a prom dress but I usually pack 2 dresses, usually cotton blends, along with one pair of jeans and a pair of shorts.

My two favorite travel dresses are a long, super light-weight, blue dress and a knee-length steel grey dress.
Both work for most situations - except maybe hiking.

My favorite gifts to give right now are water bottles, books and stickers.

I have a 4 year old and a 1 1/2 year old and we have a big yard & driveway so some of their favorite gifts have been things they can use outside; mostly sidewalk chalk and kid-sized gardening tools.

That is a great story. On another note I've just made a new goal for myself to visit this bookstore.

Take a look in the baby section of Target or go to Babys R Us they have little gadgets for getting to all kinds of tough to clean areas.

Pipe cleaners are always good.

I love the rain gutter idea! Of course all of the books won't fit but we don't need to choose from the entire library every night. I think it would be nice to have a rotating display; let my son choose the top 10 or so books to display. Keeping the reminder of the books accessible (the bottom shelf of his book case) but not as prominent.
Yes, officially on the summer to-do list.

It would be a good way to regularly cull through the collection for books to donate too.

Until my (now 3 year old) son was stable, and tall enough to use just a step stool in the kitchen, we just moved food prep that he could help with to the kitchen table. He either kneeled on a chair or sat in his booster.

This is great. I've been struggling to find a storage solution that I like - that's also toddler-proof (at least somewhat). Right now most of my yarn is out of sight (fabric bins tucked into their cubby and a storage bench) which is good and bad. The bad is that I end up with multiple skeins of yarn I didn't realize I already had hidden away.

These are pretty adorable. I might need to make these for my son's preschool class when Easter rolls around.

I like the white space. I'm not entirely sure why 'Food' isn't an option off of the main page...

Just pay attention to the world around you - there's TONS to talk about - kids included!

My husband and I both listen to NPR during different parts of our commutes or work day. After the kids are in bed inevitably one of us starts off with "Did you hear the report about....." Also This American Life has great fuel for discussion.

Also, just because you're married, don't stop asking the other person about themselves. People change, you've got to keep up.

Growing up we did homework first too. It was fine by me. I came in, made a snack, sat down and started my homework. I never felt, stifled and I was also never up crazy late doing homework.
In the winter when it got dark early, my sister and I would take over the living room building forts or play music and make up our own dances.
As we got older I had more flexibility but I stuck with my homework first routine. That also meant that from dinner time to bedtime was 'freetime.' No sudden realization that I still had to do a page of long division.
Every family is different.

We have a small pile of rags that are on the lowest shelf in the linen closet just for our little guy. When he spills something (or more often than not just wants to help), we can tell him to go get a rag from the closet. We've done it since he was about 2 years old (he's 3 now). At this point when he spills something we don't even have to say anything - he goes straight to the closet and gets a towel. We always help him but, at 3 years old, he knows he's responsible for cleaning up after himself.

seriously? I made one back in high school and hung it in front of my bedroom window. I'm pretty sure it's still there (I'm 33 now, I'll check with my dad).
To answer Alyse's question - yes I do. As an African American would you limit me to decorating with only other African American artists? Should I give away the Diego Rivera print I bought while I was studying in Mexico since I'm not Mexican?
That is just silly.
