Keep only the items you love and re-list the rest. That alone will make the task of making it all work together much less daunting. Then you need a furniture plan to decide what you need where. Also what sizes, colors and textures will work with remaining pieces. Good luck!

I recommend adding mirror between any shelving you add. Take the shelves and mirror combination to the ceiling and all the way into the corner. Adding shelving on both sides would be more balanced. The mirror backing would make it feel as if the fireplace and shelves are freestanding and the room will not feel so confined. And I bet the fireplace will feel less like it needs something.
Good luck!

There is a metal shop across the river in Hoboken, they could probably do a rougher, more industrial version for very low cost. Sorry cannot remember the name but a google search would probably find them. Nice design!

Loose the little throw pillows and purchase, make or have made three pillows the width of each seat cushion (but not higher than the back of the sofa), in silk or perhaps a beaded fabric. A similar or darker color for the new cushions will make the sofa more sleek. Balance some art work -more horizontal than vertical - with the sofa and I think the plum would work just fine.

I like to blend small spaces. When you cannot tell where one area ends and the other starts, the space just feels larger. Bring a wall color through the kitchen and into the dining area. Extend a long shelf from the entry to the living area. Paint a far wall to coordinate with what is going on in the living room, even though the wall is in another room, it is read as the far wall of the living space. It is best to just judge it on site using the above ranges as a starting point. One of those things that someone really cannot answer unless they were there in person. Sorry, I know this does not help! I even bring my lamps to the shade store to try on sizes and shapes, it is just the easiest way sometimes.

Apartment Therapy New York | Good Questions: At What Height Should a Pendant Hang Above a Table?

Any money spent should be on the bed. It is a rental and why not concentrate on items you can take with you. Taking clues on arrangements from above comments, once you have your bed in place, you can really focus on making that your sanctuary. One idea would be to hang twisted fabric or really thick ropes cheap muslin fabric from the ceiling (if you can) to give yourself a four poster look. Add lots of layers to the bed to make it very luxurious. The focus will then be off the walls. You did not mention painting so I assume you do not want to. Hanging a cluster of lanterns that reflects lots of patterned light centered on the bed. Your blank walls will be the perfect canvas for the patterns of light (but add reading lights near the bed).
Good luck and share after photos!

Actually, if you are lying down on a low sofa, this is the perfect viewing height. Most people hang their TVs too high, I like this arrangement, I actually have a wood mantel in storage, my plan was to insert a rectangular fabric shade, floating inside the opening and use the mantel as a floor lamp of sorts. Thanks for the post, it has thinking. Room looks great! http://www.designbyphoto.com/Site%206/Home.html

The basement of the rug store (stairs to the left before escalator) can be a great resource if you buy the remnants and have them cut and bound to a perfect size (service they offer). We used this source for many projects in the past.
Did not shop much in the store but a great place to take clients to get a feel for what they like and do not like.
I also use this source for my current online interior business,

Here is also a link for DIY carpet binding - have not tried it, but curious how hard this would be to do - http://www.curbly.com/ModHomeEcTeacher/posts/6092-DIY-Bind-a-Carpet-Remnant-to-Make-a-Custom-Shaped-Area-Rug

I was a NYC designer about 5 years ago.
My source for this kind of project was:
American Electroplating Co Inc
342 Lincoln Ave, Hawthorne, NJ 07506-1232
Contact Phone: (973) 427-2300

I have not called to see if they are doing small jobs but I used to call them and mail them a box of hardware, they would clean and refinish - then mail them back, sooo easy and my clients were always impressed. Owner was Dave, nice guy. Hope they are still around, worth a call. Tell them Lynne from Ville says hello!
Good luck, Lynne www.designbyphoto.com

I have seen fabric roller shades work nicely for upper cabinets and since you have thrown away some upper doors this may be an inexpensive DIY solution. Might sound a bit strange but here, I can express it better in a rendering. http://img297.imageshack.us/my.php?image=032409uglykitchen1.jpg
Also:
-Darken wood with paint that still looks like stain.
-Paint deeper color between tile backsplash and upper cabinets as well as inside back of cabinets
(birdies are just fabric paint stencil)

Best of luck,

What is making it dated is the fact that the doors are not full overlay (hinges and face frame are showing between doors). Otherwise, the veneer is wonderful. Painting the face frame a few shades darker than the wood would make it look much nicer.

Hafele's Hangar system is great solution for your space:
http://www.hafele.com/us/services/4457.asp

I would use the sliding door wall as an opportunity to bring in color/texture or art to create a wonderful backdrop for your living area.

Sometimes delays are a good thing - gives you time to really evaluate the plan for your space.

Hope this helps,
Lynne

Apartment Therapy New York | NY Good Questions: How To Section Off This Den Area?

Thank you for your quick reply to my post. You helped me make the decision to buy this used therapy tub!:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEBTOX:IT&item=330159028147&_trksid=p3984.cTODAY.m238.lVI

Now the challenge will be to refinish it. I think the size is perfect and if we build in a seat we will be using much less water than a regular tub. I don't know if we need to box it in for extra insulation, but I think we'll try it free standing to start.

It will be a few months but I'll post the results when we're done. Thanks again,
Lynne

I bookmarked your tub construction when you first posted it. Room looks great finished! We are about to build our own soaking tub but I am concerned that concrete would suck heat from the water even though we have radiant floor heating. What is your experience, does the water stay hot? We keep going back and forth between concrete and buying a used, steel hydrotherapy tub for $200 and just using the tub part (probably much easier and faster install). Would love to get your opinion in hindsight.

I like the suggestions posted so far but if your niche seems very close to either a corner or a larger peice of furniture (hard to tell from the photo) you may not want to draw attention to it by filling it up. I like the idea of hanging a mirror and treating the niche as if it was another window in the room. You can make the niche feel larger, smaller, or more centered in the room by how you hang panel drapes around it. Making it feel in proportion to the rest of the room is more important than how you decide to decorate it.
