@galeana- amen. there's no right-or-wrong or even "better" when people decide what is the right neighbourhood for them. me and most of my friends grew up in a suburb outside Toronto...we all live in different places just around Toronto- and each person's circumstances (mostly financial) determine how close they can live to the city...

personally- i work in the suburbs, and live on the outskirts of the city.

I love how it opens out into that amazing sitting room.

I also really like that the kitchn took action shots- you can totally see that this kitchen gets a lot of use.

west indian style tamarind dipping sauce- keeps well in the fridge.

pour about a 1.5 cups of boiling water over the tamarind concentrate. let sit for about 20 minutes...use your hand and mash up the tamarind paste with water...and take out the seeds and bits of skin. add 1 finely minced garlic clove and finely minced pepper (we use scotch bonnet- just a bit). if it's too thick- add some more water. add white sugar- about 3 tablespoons to start...and add until things are balanced- or to your taste.

we serve this with chickpea flour fritters- called pholourie- http://www.inner-gourmet.com/2010/10/guyanese-pholourie.html

but i eat it on everything. makes a great sauce for springrolls.

one tip I think people forget is to make food YOU are interested in....I really wanted to learn to make tamales. So I did that for a dinner party. It seems like a lot less work when you're itnerested in the food your cooking- instead of simply trying to impress guests.

this is amazing. and your home is EXACTLY why I keep telling my boyfriend we can stay in our 1+1 condo after we have a baby. It can work. There's just this perception that if you CAN have more space (i.e. afford it)- then you SHOULD.

When I was renting my condo out (for the first time) last year- I chose the single female renter over a young family for this exact reason. They had a 3 year old that they told me is sometimes loud (they were asking how soundproof the laminate floors were). I felt (and still do feel) horrible about turning them down...but this post is pretty much why I did it. I live 2 hrs away and didn't want to deal with the damage kids leave behind. Kids will be kids- and there's nothing wrong with that...I just didn't want to spend the money fixing up after them.

*knock on wood*- my current renter is awesome and I hope she stays forever.

I love when lunch bags have a hard interior- in case I have squishy stuff...at least 3 or 4 people in my office (including me) swear by California Innovations lunchbags. I got mine at walmart: http://www.californiainnovations.com/lunch-bags/frontpage.html

I've always held on to the fantasy of the perfect saturday morning...waking up- hitting our favourite brunch spot- then a farmer's market...basically my perfect days always involve food...if I can get my bf out of the house on a Saturday at all- it's an accomplishment. Add to that his many many food allergies (nuts, seafood...egg yolks!??!)- and I've had to rework the perfect Saturday...but after having survived a particularly nasty relationship where my ex ate everything, liked cooking, etc...I really had to re-evaluate what is important to a relationship.

If they don't love the same things you love...that's ok. If they're willing to go anywhere and do anything for you, because they love you. That's what matters most.

^funny my dad grew up on a farm (a rice farm...but still) and said the same thing "you can't eat money"- which he meant as buy the best possible food you can afford.

This post is spot on...I understand people's reasoning for going meatless, or vegan...but it's a very personal choice. I know friends who would scoff at the idea of how much I spend on organic antibiotic free meat..."why just not stop eating me?"- cause I love it! that's why.
