I agree with designrchick... I'd love to see at least one example of successful curtains on squat, horizontal windows like I have. There's a lot of wall between the window and the ceiling- so I'm guessing this approach might work better with vertical or floor to ceiling windows.

Regarding these comments, some of the settings are more appropriate for service or buffet-style, not intended for family-style... tweak accordingly.

I think you could make this for A LOT less than $117, just by using a hot glue gun (on the high setting). Even if you had to buy the gun.

For storage, you could make a removeable upholstered piece for the top- batting and fabric over plywood (even that could be hot glued).

I'm hacking this one. I have a rail on my apartment patio and was considering getting railing planters but they're always too small and usually ugly. With this I could use a regular pot. Sweet.

ps. I don't think I'd do that if I wasn't on the first floor.

I'd paint that garage door. Same green, same grey or something- the white is off balance.

ps- I'm not sure how I feel about posting without the homeowners' consent. "Hey, Bob, I saw your house on Apartment Therapy... you really should paint that garage door."

Awkward.

I can hear Martha Stewart in my head saying, "That's not a quilt."
She'd be right. Quilting binds a layer of insulation between two pieces of fabric, by knots or stitches. It is, however, a lovely piece of vintage Brunschwig & Fils.

Who cares about Martha... I'm fixated on the space right between Maxwell's pupil and the glaring man over his shoulder. How many rows is that? Why is the man so angry? Where is the crew?!

I find it interesting that Jonas Forsman lists "the reflection of light" as the starting point for his design and not George Nelson's "Half-Nelson" lamp... I guess imitation is the sincerest form of flattery?

I think the light in the shaft should be activated by sensors in the toilet. You have a squat and then, bam! The floor falls out from under you.

I think that makes me evil.

My favorite brown rice is Lundberg- I use a 1:2 ratio with broth, in a foil-covered 9x13 dish, 1 hour @ 400 degrees, then turn off oven and let sit for 1 hour. Nutty and perfect.

My favorite basmati rice is Tilda- the beautiful blue bag of perfection- boiled in salted water and drained. Snap.

And the fun stuff:

- Close-up shots of colors I'm trying to match while out shopping- works for clothes and household items.
- IKEA stock info, no golf pencil required.
- Haircuts I like, so I'm not trying to speak to my stylist in a language only she speaks.
- Beautiful flowers (date-stamped) so next season at the garden center I can remember what's blooming when. Way more accurate for your time-zone than a plastic tag.
- Nutrition labels, if I'm tracking and away from home. Same for the digital readout on exercise equipment.
- Recording a recipe at a friend's house.
- The order of anything to be disassembled and later reassembled.
- The contents of my friends' medicine cabinets and underwear drawers. (Just kidding!)
- Etc... A note of appreciation to this amazing technology... remember when every 35mm frame was precious?!

10 Snapshots You Should Keep in Your Phone's Photo Album

For the following, make sure you use a photo app that has a time/date stamp feature:

- Snapshots of anything before you rent (car, moving van, equipment, etc) will provide a better backup than the written description of any damages.
- I temporarily switched a company car for another and mine was damaged when I got it back- next time I'll take photos before I hand it over. Same goes for dropping at garage.
- Dry cleaning before you drop it off- you can either locate a preexisting stain to make sure it's gone, or prove that a new stain is, in fact, new.

Basically, you can document the condition of anything you hand over to someone else or anything that you take possession of and will then be liable for.

Cory,
I am so impressed with your lifestyle and independence. I am especially jealous that you have fresh eggs! Yes, I think you should clear a little clutter, but for a different reason. Climbing over books on your way to bed is risking a fall that could severely limit your mobility. My Grammie was a spitfire, and watching her convalesce after a broken hip was heart-breaking. Keep yourself on your feet will ensure you can live in this darling place for years to come.

@melissapauline- I think that's a great idea. "Aging in Place" sounds similar to what I've heard called Universal design... homes built for a variety of ages and abilities. Often, the building of accessible spaces costs more (wider doors, etc) but that wouldn't be the case if more people demanded it.

30 years ago, when my grandparents built their home, they opted for wider halls and doorways, low threshholds, even a ramped sidewalk from the street. They didn't want their age or future mobility to be a factor in being able to live in their dream home. In my grandpa's words "We're going out of here feet first." And that's exactly how it went.

I'm getting ready to sow Physalis seeds for my patio containers- should grow like a tomato. Fair warning, not all varieties are edible and according to every gardening blog I've seen, they are INSANELY invasive in a garden.
