"So you can be munching on your PB&J with your elbows in the grass, looking out your apartment window" and enjoying the contribution of all the microorganisms that make up a healthy soil ecosystem to your apartment ecosystem and your PB&J.

Unless the grass is supposed to be growing in sterile soil, in which case it won't last very long and is intended to be tossed...

Bringing the Outdoors In with the PicNYC Table

If you've ever been on a multi-day backpacking trip, you know that bread, hard cheese, non-leafy raw vegetables, fruits, jams and nut butters last perfectly well for two weeks at room temperature.

If you have any of the above that will be consumed within two weeks, and are having their textures ruined by freezing, consider putting them outdoors, or in a cold spot indoors (modern root cellar).

The only things that seem like they would really pose a problem are leafy greens, soft cheeses and milks.

In no particular order:
- Make lunch and put in fridge
- If I'm planning to buy lunch, make sure I have enough cash in the wallet
- Watch dishes and pots, brush off sink residue
- Clean sink strainer
- Tie off trash (sometimes)
- Turn down thermostat to turn off wall heater in living room (in winter - I live in a mild climate)
- If I'm bicycling to work the next day, check the tire pressure, seat height and position, and chain lubrication
- Make sure front door is locked
- Be grateful

Denisegk is taking this way beyond my criticism. I was criticizing a website that offered a Pope-like dispensation for guilt when someone uses their graphic when regifting.

The meaning of "regifting" (see Wikipedia) can be neutral (passing on a gift) but in my experience in the US is usually if not always negative (getting rid of an unwanted, usually junky gift).

I think there's a useful distinction to be made:
giving/gifting = giving a gift that you think the recipient would like, regardless of its origin (bought, made, received)
regifting = passing on a low-quality and unwanted received gift to another person under the guise of giving a gift

This website, because someone invented a graphic, is trying to blur the line between gift-giving and assistance with disposal of unwanted objects.

I don't consider the giver of a regifted package of bath salts automatically destigmatized because they've attached a cool vector graphic to it. If they don't want the bath salts and want me to help dispose of it, say so, but don't pretend it's a gift TO me.

Gorgeous, as is the rest of her Etsy collection. Thanks for the post.

Someone who worked for many years in department stores told me to always wash new clothes before wearing them. I thought that was because clothes might have been fumigated to kill pests that might have hitched a ride at the factory, or because other shoppers might have tried on the clothes - or even worn them and brought them back. Now a third reason to heed her advice!

It looks neat, but doesn't change the fact that bees need their space undisturbed, which in my experience is a radius of about 15 feet. You can't raise bees on a porch or a deck that you plan to use for gardening, eating out, etc. A corner of an urban rooftop, yes, but what's the value of the slick new design then?

It's cute, but:
- the plastic isn't made to be UV resistant. How long will it last in the sun?
- all it would take to destroy the structure is a few exacto knives cutting into plastic bottles at eye-level, and pouring out the sand. The bottles would be hard to replace.

Seems to me that another layer of plastering on both sides would solve the problem.

My experience, having grown regular curly kale, Red Russian kale, and lacinato kale, is that the Red Russian is the least bitter, but the least productive, the lacinato and the curly are about equal in production, and the curly kale is the hands-down winner on ease of growth: in the same plot with the lacinato, which is attacked by both slugs and persistent powdery mildew, the curly kale has no problems (although I think the young plants can get aphids). Curly kale is also the only one that is thick enough to dry into kale chips.

I find this really offensive. I don't care how eco it is, it does not belong here. It ignores its environment like a person in the subway who is wearing leaky earphones and blasting (pick your unfavorite) music at everyone when they just want to relax.

Kind of a cute idea, but I would use a big needle and basting thread and sew them by hand. This would be nice with a variety of kale leaves as well. You could hide little vials of water and put fall flowers in behind it.

These "high design" graphics are pretty, but they also date more quickly than more generic designs. It may be greener to use something that will not wear out its welcome as quickly!

I think it depends on what you use a lot of, and if you want to use organic or non-GMO oils. Balanced against the time it takes to make. For me, making salad dressings is worth it; making BBQ sauce and ketchup (yes, Heinz is the only one) is not.
