This time last year, the heat in our air conditioningless apartment, combined with having a dog who is heat sensitive + 3 flights of stairs really got to be too much. We came home to our dog half overheated in April and realized we wouldn't make it through August again.

We started looking Easter weekend but didn't end up moving until September 1. We loved our old place but couldn't be happier in our new one.

My best advice would be to not just make the call and move. Take as much time as you need to find a place - even if it mean doubling up a month's rent. That way you aren't stressed that you will lose your place and end up settling.

When Do You Know It's Time to Move?

I've been meaning to visit BA, it's on my top three list for a big trip this year. If anyone has any advice, please share! Mostly, I'd love to know what a good amount of time would be to spend there (a week? A few days more or less?) and what a good budget would be to bring.

Also - would you advise doing BA as a trip in and of itself, or visit somewhere else in S America in the same trip?

Not one with a TV, huh? I wish I could say the same of my livingroom, but I am among the 90% who can't get away without one (as much as I'd like to, I'm not the only one with a say).

How about some nice set ups for people like me?

Where to Find Metal Platform Bed?

I just bought my first loft and the previous owner did a lot of the work on it himself. It looked beautiful but soon became clear he chose form over function (he was a graphic designer, not industrial or interior. Makes sense to me now). The kitchen cupboards are only 10" deep so large plates don't fit and the drawers only open 5". The light switch for the mezzanine bedroom is beside the front door, so if you want the light off you need to then climb up to bed in the dark. The cupboards over the sink in the bathroom that look like sooo much storage don't even fit a small deodorant upright let alone a blow dryer. Oh, and there's not a single place to hang a towel.

Overall, it's mostly little picky/preferential stuff but boy has it been odd to be constantly saying "how did they live like this?"

Thankfully, I knew that the train went by frequently and was surprised that we cannot feel it and only faintly hear it.

@virtuelsie don't worry - we won't paint the ceiling! Thanks for your cork suggestions.

Thanks to everyone else again for all of the suggestions (and concern for our lack of outer handrail - can you believe the previous owner had 2 small children?). We can't wait to get in and start making this place our own.

@anthropos It is in the Junction Triangle area so not as crazy as Downtown proper. We lucked out I think ;)

@visuallingualltd I'm not sure I understand your statement. I wouldn't have bought this space if I didn't understand what it entails and asking for advice about a smart bed frame option doesn't imply that I don't.

Thanks for all the suggestions already and for the wonderful comments! We are very excited to move in.

@citygirlsf taking out the carpet is on the top of our to do list once we take possession. We dont know what's underneath but if we need to lay something new we are thinking cork. If anyone has other suggestions though, I would love to hear.

@canadianmango we aren't going to paint the ceiling but we are planning to paint the built ins white.

@zepper I believe one railing is fine here (im in Toronto) but it is scary - addressing that is on our long list for sure.

It would be awesome if the legs could be removed but stored to be readded in the future.

If you lower it to use as a coffee table, get some floor pillows that could be pulled out when you want to play it!

I like the weathervane. I can't make an educated guess so I'm going to go out on a whim and say that.

My cat loves sleeping on backpacks/messenger bags. He makes a nice little bed out of them. I also brought home a nice danish teak upholstered chair a little while ago and it now belongs exclusively to him.

For toys, he plays with foam squishee balls and those white things that look like tables that come in some pizza boxes so that the cheese doesn't stick to the top of the box. Really, those are his favourite.

He eats anything knit or woven (think hats, scarfs, blankets) and anything that has tassles, fringe or drawstring. We learned early on to get that stuff out of the way. Thankfully he stopped eating kleenex.

I have a platform bed with a small ledge on either side - maybe 4 inches. Bed tables didn't fit when we moved into our new, oddly shaped bedroom so I put my glasses and book on that ledge when I go to sleep. It works well and the bedroom doesn't look cluttered.

In Toronto we don't have anything TOO scary. Cockroaches and bed bugs if you are unlucky. Spiders and centipedes are disgusting but not harmful here. Mosquitoes are just plain annoying.

It really depends on what you are looking for. The antique market at St. Lawrence is good on Sundays. Kensington is better for clothes than furnishings. Check out Queen near Roncesvalles for antique furniture, as well as Queen East of Broadview.

We try our best - there have been a lot of cooler periods in Toronto and today there is a nice breeze.

On humid days, though, we can't do without it. We're also in a top floor apartment - a first for me and likely a last.

I have a Gus sofa that I took the cushion covers off of for cleaning and it was the worst decision. The cover shifts and twists every time we sit down now and looks like crap within a day of us readjusting. Mine is one long cushion though, so maybe yours wont be so bad with the individual ones.

I don't have much advice for cleaning it without removing them but I'll definitely be checking back to see if anyone else does.
