Love the whole place, seriously great! But omg, TOTALLY stealing the panel curtain idea! We have a 5x5 expedit that is filled to the brim with beer and I would love nothing more than to not have to look at it, and I'm sure the panels would provide UV protection for the beer as well.

LOVE this place! I've been trying to get my husband to agree to let me do one wall with an animal stencil but it's been a hard sell. Maybe if I concede a purple wall (his favorite color)? Thanks for the inspiration!

We had an Intellivision too! It's actually sitting in a tub under my table right now. I need to figure out a way to hook it up to my flatscreen TV so that I can find out if it still works! My favorite games were Utopia and Snafu. :)

Am I the only one annoyed at the misuse of "everyday" for "every day" on the landing page? No? :/

Based on the captions in Japanese on the images, these people LIVE there. These are not hotels.

Could I live in one of these? Absolutely not. I have lived in Japan, near Tokyo, actually. Rents are insane of course but they could definitely find more reasonable prices away from Shibuya-ku. But keep in mind the commute in from an outer neighborhood or suburb is not always reasonable or easy, since Tokyo is so massive, and trains are not 24-hour there. People do it, but commutes can be quite arduous. So, if these people have to work at odd hours or just really need to be in that specific area, it might be a good option. It must be a good enough option for the two above, since they actually do it!

Also consider repeatable stencils! Cheaper than wallpaper and easy to paint over.

The tone of your comment is exactly why we do need articles like this. Downsizing and living in small spaces is certainly looked down upon in many circles, as illustrated by your "race to the bottom" quip. I get plenty of jibes from my own friends and family for living in a 500 square foot apartment, and it gets really old. For many of us, living in larger spaces is either not an option or not appealing. I choose to live where I do because of the needs of my family, not yours. There's nothing wrong with living in a larger space, but there's no reason for you to criticize those of us who, for whatever reason, live in smaller spaces.

I would also like to point out the lack of any toilet or water supply in the first one. Wow. How much you wanna bet the family gets in and 5 minutes later the little girl has to use the lou?

I agree with erinstl. When I saw that picture I cringed a bit. I can't even stand to walk on my tatami with slippers on and the idea of putting chairs on it... no. Be careful not to tear them up because they look rather old already and the top layer is most likely brittle and will rub off easily.

Love love love! Disco/deco... how ingenious! May I ask where you got your sideboard and coffee table? (And the lamp in your bedroom?)

I like the furniture you chose for the babies' room. I think they look quite nice against the brick-red color of the walls. The drawings are really adorable but difficult to see far away. I like the idea of doing them in chalk (or pastels, whatever medium you used) but they might look better redone in paint.
