I'd just like to add that you should never just put your plate on the floor and let animals eat off of them. I moved in with someone who did that, and every time I wanted to eat something, the dog was always trying to get to my plate. I quickly had to break the dog of the "cleaning the plate" habit.

Though my cat is curious about what I eat (she is always trying to get into my face or near my food) she never eats anything. I don't interact with her while I'm eating, but she's never more affectionate or interested in me until I've got something to eat in front of me. She loves to sniff. It was difficult getting her to take pills, the vet telling me to put them in cheese or peanut butter, because she wasn't interested in either.

We can revolutionize kitchens by not having appliances for cooking. Just a lot of cabinet and counter space and have pre-installed gadgets for cooking. Can you imagine how much time and energy we would save?

Carefully ignite some bourbon to burn off the alcohol. Add it to some black tea, with honey and lemon and a pinch of sea salt.

Everyone wants a fast and "easy" way to make something.

I love the process of making caramel. I too wonder how everyone else is making it so that it is a hassle and takes lots of pots and pans and is stressful.

I don't even use a recipe anymore. I just make caramel and am so involved in the process I lose myself. I call it small batch caramel (sauce, candies, whatever I'm making) because when I make it that way of course no two sauces are alike, making them quite unique and they have their own "personality" so to speak.

I guess that's how much of cooking is. Once you learn the process, it's not some big project to be endured. It's almost a meditation.

This is funny because recently I've been craving, ahem, Tuna Helper. My dad was not a cook, so when I lived with him, this was his specialty. I was searching online for a homemade version which I haven't found.

Thanks for posting this. I'll make this and use it as a basis to curb my craving!

For a while, I was up to two home baked cookies a day. I had to squash that quickly, but I too can't get enough to eat or sleep or drink (dehydration). I hate stairs, walking to the store, basically leaving my bed and I was running 12 miles a week.

Thanks for this post. I'm going to crawl back into bed for a while.

I had to read this to see if there was an explanation for having so many measuring spoons. I've done the apartment and the kitchen cure and I have 2 sets: one for home to convert recipes, and one in a toolkit for work.

Personally, that would annoy me, having so many. Growing up in a kitchen where my mom's rule was clean as you go, one set is more than enough for me.

I wear one at work, but at home, I don't, though I have a really cute one my mom gave me. I suppose that means I'll have to start entertaining and wearing it.

When she wrote wine and cheese, I assumed she meant something other than cubed cheddar and pepper-jack., which more defines the problem.

Make something for both parties that is more approachable such as cheddar, gouda, and make your own goat cheese ball (like those cheesy cheese balls from that company). For the other crowd, maybe make a beer-cheese fondue as a cross-over dish, some wings with maybe 2 dipping sauces and other small bites that don't alienate anyone.

Basically, keep it simple, but a little more interesting. The last thing you want to do is make a lot of stuff nobody will eat.

White chocolate peppermint bark.
Make toffee and put the chocolate on int to melt, then spread and let cool.
White chocolate hot chocolate.
You can basically substitute it for chocolate chips in most recipes, though I would reduce the amount of sugar in the recipe since the chocolate is so sweet.

This is basically a pumpkin pastry cream, which works, I guess. Personally I prefer the texture of the baked custard. You could make the brulee base and cook it on the stovetop, add bloomed gelatin, and let it set in the cooler for a smoother texture.

I did something similar last year with bone shaped cookies, white chocolate molded in a teeth ice tray with gummy worms. Had "Do Not Cross" tape around the cake with a small shovel for guests to "dig" around with.

I'm assuming that this "washing soda" is a carbonate, and not a bicarbonate, so you need more. Baking powder, a bicarbonate, reacts with both moisture (milk, water, etc) AND heat, therefore the single carbonate only reacts to one of the two, I can't remember which. I learned this in pastry school. Since it is single-acting, you would need more of it. Seeing that you need to add it to the ale, that is to assist the leavening.
