Isn't California the reason why there are flame retardants in everything?

Everything I've read indicates that it's a CA law that caused manufacturers to put flame retardants in furniture and baby gear. It's been ridiculously difficult to find an infant car seat that's not going to put me in the poor-house, that doesn't contain BPA, flame-retardants, and formaldehyde.

I would love to see some recommendations for presses. I'm having a difficult time deciding between an aluminum and cast iron press.

Thanks!

Most restaurant pre-rinse faucets have both the hose and a spigot, as pictured in the 2, 3,, & 5. Having one without a spigot seems like a lot of money spent on bad design.

I should also note that my folks' Genesis is their first of 2. The old Genesis resides at their home in the Bahamas, and the island elements. It takes a beating, but still serves up a great meal.

Weber. Even the lower-end models are worth it.

Non-Webers just aren't worth it. My in-laws rarely use their grill, but still have to replace it every few years. When I grill over there, I find it a PITA. My folks have had their Genesis for almost 20 years, and I've had mine for over 10. You can replace just about any part on it.

Gah! Whole milk products aren't "bad." The implication that skim or low fat is "better" is frustrating. Calcuim absorption is better with fat, and for some, the fat helps digest dairy.

I switched from soy milk to whole, pastured, lightly pasteurized milk about 6 years ago. My cholesterol remained the same, and I actually lost weight.

I had one in my last two rentals and was relived when the house we purchased had a solid, deep, stainless sink. I broke so many dishes and glasses in those white sinks, and was grateful to have a dishwasher. Unfortunately, the helpful guests will try to hand wash what they use right after they use it, and room mates seem to want to make more work for themselves contributed to the loss of a lot of stuff.

Half-lard, half butter if there are no vegetarians planning on eating it. It there are, all butter.

From a health perspective, I don't trust shortening.

I've got to agree with you. I don't have a ton of money to throw around, but I believe in voting with your dollars, and I'd rather be putting into the hands who nourish my family. Local meat and poultry are really expensive, so we supplement other forms of protein and eat it less often. I also find that nothing goes to waste. When we get a quality product that may cost a bit more, we only buy what we need and make sure that it gets used before it goes bad.

I use "Notes" on my iPhone/iCloud account. I can update it on my phone or desktop, and they'll sync up automatically. Because my husband has a Droid, we can't stay completely synched on one app. However, he's in school full-time, and I take care of most of the grocery shopping/household main. for the time-being.

If he's running to the store, I use the email function to send him the list. He pulls the email up on his phone, then sends it back after he's removed what he bought.

My folks live on Great Exuma in the Bahamas, where there's a salt pond. On a trip to visit a few years ago, the weather wasn't great, and it was extremely windy. This made for perfect salt harvesting conditions, and we headed over to the salt pond after eating some grouper at a great little road-side fish fry.

Fresh veggies, jerky, albacore tuna, silken tofu...

Cheese actually stores well at room temperature, and investing in a butter bell will allow you to safely keep your butter unrefrigerated.

I agree with stoojie. There's a lot a research to back up his/her statements. The problem is that the ethical animal husbandry lobby doesn't have the same capital/influence as the corn and soybean lobby.

I've been avoiding corn, vegetable, canola oils for years. I recently saw an episode of "How It's Made" that featured the making of canola oil, and I knew that I had made the right choice.

I don't. Canola and Vegetable oils are so processed. I'm particularly skeptical of Canola, or Canadian Oil...

That's one of the first thing I did when I bought my house. Every time it's come up in conversation, people are surprised to hear that this is possible. For some reason I continue to be shocked that they don't know this.
