donnyc - what a great uncle you are! However, you can't really take offense when the parents forget to say thank you. Since you are such a prolific gift giver, I bet the parents have a case of "thank you fatigue". I know I would.

As a mother of four myself, I can tell you that it gets a bit crazy making a special point of thanking specific people for specific things, especially when my kids are lucky enough to receive so much from loving grandparents. Not that we are not grateful, just that it's hard to muster up so much enthusiasm to thank someone for yet *another* well-intentioned gift that actually isn't really of any use. Especially when the thanks that is desired by the giver is not a simple "thank you" from the kids upon receipt, but a special phone call/letter/email from the parents detailing the exact level of thankfulness and gushing details of the gift's usefulness.

donnyc - you are a great uncle! It's lovely to hear someone so involved with their nieces and nephews, but I'm sorry

These sites look great. It does always strike me, however, that perhaps there needs to be a site where contractors can recommend and rate customers too.

Geez - I thought my laptop without the number 5 was bad - thank goodness they didn't go that far! I have had a flat screen monitor blown up by water sprayed on it by a 3 year old boy, and just recently another 3 year old boy put 5 (count them! 5!) discs in the Wii - thanks to ebay and a special screwdriver, they were all recovered but 1!

Looks great, but as the wife of an electrical contractor in Australia, the following kind of sticks in my throat:
- I would recommend that you spray the cardboard with a fireproof spray so that it doesn't go up in flames after a few hours with the light on.
- in Australia we have strict regulations that electrical installations only be conducted by someone qualified to do so.

The lampshade does look great, and it is a great idea Charles. There are so many different ways to safely customise your existing lights - sorry to be a party pooper, but everybody need to be reminded that messing with electricity is dangerous.

mistymoo09- unfortunately that "average" middle range wage is quite low - we don't qualify for any payments, but we do get 50% back every quarter for child-care costs (which is not means tested). We currently pay $65.00 per day for childcare, of which we get back 50% - that is pretty cool, but unfortunately childcare centres just happen to raise their fees whenever a new refund measure is announced. Our costs have risen from $40.00 per day in 2005 to $65.00 now in 2010!

Still, better to be in Australia than the US by the sounds of it! I had no idea that infant mortality rates and maternity leave conditions were as bad as they are there.
