Well, it only took reading one comment, the first, to irritate me and take away from the actual post itself. I'm just curious, why is it that all the "I want to be politically correct," whinny nuts come and post on this blog only? I've been reading for years, but these days I only stop in once every few weeks (about as much as I can take of reading the insanity on these boards). The comments on the NYTimes aren't nearly as bad and there is some serious thought provoking discussion going on there.

Antoine, from one guy (at times I wonder if I am the only one that reads AT) to another, very cool place. I know the building (AF). I did not mistake you for a trust funder and don't stress about the deer head. Unfortunately in America we have a lot of self righteous nuts with nothing else better to do. Plus the level of jealousy here is well, pretty much overwhelming. I hate to say it, but based on many of the screen names....let's just say that I like women and I'd probably never marry any of the women that post on here..Good news is guys like us have great places and taking a line from The Girl that Played with Fire..."there are plenty of women out there not as particular" but I'm figuring neither of us have issues with this...

Again, solid choice on your purchase...

lol. "best places to live for the "young, single and cash-strapped."

You have to love that comment. Yeah, they told me that back in 1993. Sorry, but you're only about 15 years too late. The LES was once a magical underground. Now, well, not so much...

Nerdaliciousful, can I buy you for $500 and pour beer and vomit all over you? Just saying...

Figuring this gorgeous sofa has more value than you, I think I'd be making a sound investment.

The original poster should have no problem getting btw $2500-$3500 for this item. I sold a Perobell sofa, which I paid $3800, for $1250 on CL about 2 yrs ago. Not terrible considering use and motivation to move.

girlndocs, you have some serious issues. I'm just saying. Since no one on your end is willing to point that out, I will.

Gordon; no chance. We are way too outnumbered. Showing photos of women in the house is no longer considered politically correct and god for bid a shot should be posted with a woman in the kitchen or even worse in the bathroom, forget it, AT would likely be contacted by the Federal government for crimes against humanity..Well, you get my point.

KarynM, you're 100% correct. I read AT regularly, but I don't comment much anymore (except for this) I'm starting to get really p.o
d with the comments I read on here lately. Anyone read yesterdays "hunk" contractor post. Just AT having fun, I say, but no its got to turn into men vs women.

Compared to the outcome of last years contest, these two are much more appropriate contenders for the competition. It left somewhat of a stain on the competition. In part, I think that is why Room and Board didn't act as a sponsor this year. I think most people in AT land were outright shocked and it was a clear case of cheating with his facebook friends. To me it was an embarrassment.

I also have to agree with the comment Corrie made above about the Brooklyn place. Quoting her "The Brooklyn place is inside of one of the newly erected soulless stainless steel buildings popping up all over Williamsburg, which makes me automatically dislike it. Those buildings are the Ikea of architecture" is 100% correct.

There is nothing genuinely cool about Andrew's apartment. It's really become a competition about items and some paint colors, etc.

I also have to agree that Beth from Chicago should be the winner based on an actual small cool space. I said it a few weeks ago and I'll stand by it, but am I surprised by the outcome, no, not in the least bit.

We should all probably thank AT for the providing the opportunity to participate, because it really is a great idea and has been for years and the site provides SO MUCH useful information. I don't think we should outright blame AT for the outcome. We have to keep in mind that the better part of probably 80% of the viewers and entrants for this competition quite frankly, have absolutely no idea what the competition is truly about. As I said earlier, it's mainly become a decorating and popularity contest and pretty much only that. In relation to everything in todays society, should we be all that surprised?

I agree the new platform is not all that ideal. I basically tune out during the "finals" stage since these places are paired up with no apparent reasoning. If I were to criticize AT, I would think they need to do a much better job of monitoring the competition meaning, break it down, take it back to the way it was originally done. A true small cool competition. Nothing over say 500 or 600sf, upon entering you MUST have one cool architectural feature that makes you stand out. High ceilings, 10 foot windows, beamed ceilings, something. From there AT should send back to the poster or put on the site. There are far too many entries these days which probably complicates things. Poor photos, no entry and so on...

There's not a lot of items in the apartment, which is for me, soothing to see.

I'd like to see a photo a Nilia, so I could pee on it. Sorry, that was probably the most intelligent thing I could say. I had a whole long written out response to many comments. Not good and I'll be glad I deleted it. SwedishChef, I'm with you brother. You try being 34 in Manhattan and single. Women here will tear you apart. It's not good.

I am not sure what to say, but having lived with girlfriends in the past, the sight of a women on the toilet is nothing out of the ordinary. When put into context with the space and the premise behind the photos, there certainly is a design element. I get it. Who cares. I actually appreciated it after seeing a series of very underwhelming, "safe" homes in this competition. To each is their own, however I am literally jaw dropped, shocked at the conservative thinking of many people. Anyone remember The Tunnel from the mid 90's? The bathrooms in most of these places were co-ed. I'd be leaking next to a transvestite, with a girl sitting on a chair right next the open urinal. I'll leave it at that...

1050908- I am not sure I entirely understand your comment. If it was a child in the photo or if a child views this. Frankly, if you intended to make a point about a child viewing and being offended, thats just absurd. That's the same mentality that I personally despise in people. First thing that comes to mind is "OH COME ON"

For the poster Yul, that made the assumption that the owner is gay, I don't think that was necessary. I'll judge people on "effort" hence my unlimited "your photos suck comments" but I don't think its appropriate to pass judgement on ones preferences based on a painting. To make an association btw an item = sexual preference, well that's just ignorant.

Back to the original reason for posting. The loft is totally bad ass. Digging the floors, sleeping area and the swivel, hanging flat screen was genius for the space. Thanks for being original.

Golden retrievers snout is plopped on the cool concrete behind the orange chair. Kind of like waldo, it took me a minute to see it. I'm a sucker for a household full of pets.

Antique windows were used well, even if it doesn't give much privacy. Although I don't see the cats posing much of a voyeur risk.

That's some floor plan.

If anyone can translate lazysmurfs comment into english, I'd be interested to know what it means.

I'm actually liking this one. Good styling throughout. I agree the concrete floors help a great deal in making everything else pop.

I think we now know who will win this years contest. I'd be shocked if you don't, Beth. Aside from a handful of other entries, this is exactly what I envision this competition to be. Great space with great architecural features with innovative, bright, simple uses of design. I'll give you a second vote when I get home to my laptop. This place is freaking great. Man, I'm loving that sleep loft area. All white on the white floors. Even digging the copper colored mosaic tiled ledge accented by the green wall. The photos are very much appreciated.

And what is with all the cool girls with totally rad places coming out of Chicago this year?

"Housebunny is so right. Every single guy's apartment looks just like this..
posted by Amber Rose on April 8th 2010 at 5:18pm"

That's odd because some of my friends and clients that are single here in NYC, their apartments don't look like this. Minimal perhaps, but a sense of design is not something only left for everyone but straight men.

"Ha! Every boyfriend I ever had, I swear, had this same apartment. In fact, most of my single straight guy friend's homes still look like this. I never thought of it as a conscious style before. This look says to me "lonely boy, never cooks at home, pbr in the fridge, maybe has toilet paper".

Thanks for giving me a smile and a trip down memory lane :)
posted by housebunny on April 8th 2010 at 4:30pm"

So being straight, having good taste and just maybe an eye for design is not allowed? I didn't know by not having toilet paper, would be considered an asset in the parlance of the dating world. I thought cooking eggs and toast and serving breakfast in bed were things women liked. Well, I guess I now know why I am single. I've been doing things all wrong. Or at least as modern society dictates.

"man, i wish the guys i dated apartments looked like this.....not that it's perfect or anything but as far as a 'bachelor pad' this guy is leagues ahead of many others.

couch source? is that one of the urban mcm reproductions?

That could quite conceivably be the saddest post on here, of all the entries I've seen.

My comment:
Apartment is totally fine. Yeah, and I get it with the books. I'll second others who said putting something over the windows, that's not a flag or a sheet, would do. Go to ikea and pick up one of those shades that allows light through. Not one for each window, but one longer one, which will cover both windows and lower it to the point below the bars. That's it man..

Not sure if that is a concrete wall in the back drop, but whatever it is, along with the floor to ceilings windows out to the veranda is working really well. The space itself, is pretty bad ass. This space by definition is small cool, however other than photo 1, the crooked, poor angle photos are yet again, a shame.

Ahhh! Electric range!! No just kidding, but seriously, electric ahhh!

Place is pretty cool overall. Digging the floors and the area in photo five is damn cool, indeed. Everything looks in scale and the use of the space is intelligent. Come on, who doesn't have a weak spot for walls of books. It’s probably the most aesthetically pleasing thing someone can have in their home.

Sure, my pleasure and I appreciate you taking me seriously, because I can be SERIOUS! Its a really nice place, that I would absolutely live in. Its very cozy and maybe its just me, but its like the dead of summer in NYC right now:) and I'm feeling a little bohemian at the moment, bohemian like a a kingsize mattress on the floor (no frame) over a big amber colored persian rug, with a Wegner wishbone chair off to the side and a light green silk tapestry hanging off its arm. In the background, an 8 foot x 6 foot photo of the godfather. :) My new space is still loft like at a whopping 285sf with 3 massive 8 foot windows and birch hardwood floors in Union Sq. I may still enter, but I'm shopping for a rug at the moment. If I find it, you'll see my place, if not, then maybe another time...
