As someone learning upholstery as a trade, I encourage you to try it, but here are a few things you may want to know:
1) Upholstery is not so much about sewing as many people think.
2) It's much more about using tools, specifically staple guns.
3) You can use a hand staple gun, but you will either find it extremely difficult with a cheap manual one, end up wasting money on an expensive one, end up wasting money on an electric one, or eventually need to buy a pneumatic one. That's not a bad thing, but that will be a greater cost than just fabric and time.
4) You'll also need tools like a staple remover, tack hammer, etc, and supplies like curve ease, maybe batting and foam if the old stuff is gross or gets moved around, etc. These expenses add up.

Maybe go with a slipcover if you are a decent sewer.
