It's absolutely rude to have a party, especially during the holidays, and not warn people in advance that they'll have to take their shoes off regardless of the weather. Presumably, I'd wear heals to such an occasion and really don't feel remotely comfortable walking around someone else's house with a whole boatload of strangers barefoot. The hosts may be spotless themselves, but think of all those other people who presumably weren't expecting to take their shoes off either and the crap they could be spreading around.

Walking around with a Mike's Pastry box SCREAMS tourist. It is truly not that good. Maria's has the best cannoli.

LA Burdick's is a chain. Head into the South End for the best food. Toro, Coppa, Aquitaine. Incredibly decadent brunch at Mistral (not quite SE, but on the way).

There were bamboo floors already in our kitchen when we bought our house. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. Gaps have formed in many many places and fluids go right through. Its scratched all over, although with the light color, you can't really see it unless you're looking.

I wish I wish I could have my own room. Sigh, to be able to read in bed or not have to sleep with earplugs to drown out the snoring.

I'm very introverted and need to be alone a lot, but I wouldn't want to give up shared living space altogether, just shared sleeping space.

We did this and it's worked fantastic! You put the beadboard right to the top of the tile and then you nail the trim directly to the wall above that. Caulk the hell out of it all, prime, and paint.

While I wouldn't want people checking in to my house for all sorts of privacy reasons, the whole looking you up in the phonebook thing is a very good point.

Sure, the phonebook doesn't have information about you, but once someone goes to whitepages dot com, they can put your address into zillow or any number of other sites and can see exactly what your house looks like, where it is, what the purchase history is, what it's estimated worth is, and what it looks like inside if it was on the market in the past several years and had pictures online.

Then, a simple google search with the name and the town you live in can easily pull up the names of your family members, spouse, etc.

For a minute I thought I was looking at an article written by me, because I am also a Jennifer with a December birthday that fell during finals week. Luckily, my family was always very generous and vigilant about separating my Christmas and birthday gifts. All through elementary school, we had my birthday parties on my half-birthday in June so that all my little friends could come over and wear party hats and get their faces painted by some poor unfortunate person dressed up as Minnie Mouse.

Over the years, I've really embraced the birthday-Christmas combination and now throw lavish parties the weekend before Christmas to celebrate. (And by lavish I mean there's a facebook invite and I buy cheese that doesn't come pre-shredded in bags.)

So, to a fellow December Jennifer, I bid ye a Happy Birthday Month.

$400 is less than what it costs to heat my 1500 square foot apartment for a month. My husband needs a fan to sleep, and we generally have a space heater going in the bedroom in the winter, so this could cut down on the number of wires I'm likely to trip over in the middle of the night.

The vintage ones, the vintage throw backs, and the high gloss ones are great.

Anything else, no.

I've read about this house before. It can sustain itself off the grid. It's in Poland. Zombie apocalypse aside, I feel like with the things that have gone down in that country in the past 100 years, I would totally buy it or build one if I could. And with the amount of press this house has gotten they wouldn't have any trouble selling it, I'm sure.

While I did not pick the granite in my kitchen, I haven't had a single problem with it. It conceals crumbs, has never stained as far as I know (though I'm not sure I'd notice if it did because of its coloring), and has never gotten a knick or anything like that. It seems fairly indestructible.

And my stainless appliances have never been a problem. A little bit of olive oil makes them shiny.

White appliances...if they're not super retro I think they're awful.

Most people thought my husband and I were crazy when we bought a two-family house two years ago at the age of 24. But with the VA loan and an extremely good interest rate, we were able to get a beautiful old house with a second and third floor for us and the first floor for a tenant. We put nothing down and didn't pay for closing costs. We're technically in a suburb, but we're only a mile from the subway. It's an easy walk to the grocery store and downtown.

We intend to own this house for the rest of our lives, and may even live in the downstairs apartment when we're elderly. That little apartment pays for more than half of the cost of our mortgage/insurance/taxes. We pay less for our huge three-bedroom portion of the house than we did for rent on our old two-bedroom apartment. We plan to live there for another 8 years because when we do have children, there's plenty of room for them. But if we ever do want to up and leave, we can because the rent we'd get on our apartment will more than cover the cost of the house.

We don't think the value of the house has increased much over the course of the last two years, even with all the renovations that we've put into it ourselves, but that's ok because hopefully we'll never ever sell.

Stay away from Chelsea. Not good, not good at all. Really is seedy, really.

I've lived here my entire life, went to college in the city, now go to grad school in the city, and over 100 of my cousins are scattered throughout Charlestown, Somerville, Cambridge, Watertown, Medford, Malden, etc.

Look for areas on the Orange Line and Red Line. Somerville, further out in Cambridge, JP (not Jackson Square). Malden has one or two really lovely neighborhoods for dirt cheap and right on the Orange line, but you have to be careful.

Southie has been a big up-and-comer lately. Parking available, not far from downtown. I would definitely look there. A LOT of people are moving there.

The South End is gorgeous and were I to win the lottery, I would live there in a heartbeat, but good luck parking that car and finding something in your price range will likely involve a basement.

Fenway is a disaster. If you like screaming Sox fans and vomiting coeds, this neighborhood is for you. It's overpriced. People think it's a good idea to live there and then move out after a year. EXTREMELY difficult to park in during baseball season.

Mission Hill: see Fenway, just cheaper and with bigger apartments.

Allston/Brighton...don't get me wrong, I spend a lot of time out there, but the Green Line is my nemesis. It takes for-ev-er and it makes me nauseous because it stops at all the lights. Students, students everywhere. Awesome bars, great food, but then I get to go home to my quiet apartment after, in my car. I have a lot of friends who loved living there when we were 21, but now that we're 25 feel like they've outgrown it.

Brookline is a little more adult than Allston/Brighton, but that much more expensive, and just as difficult to get to.

Charlestown is very charming, lovely, pretty, but parking is heinous and your apartment probably won't include a spot. It's not cheap either.

If you don't mind being borderline suburban, Quincy, Watertown, Arlington, Melrose are only a few minutes more on the T. It actually takes me less time to get downtown from Melrose on the Orange Line than it takes my friends to get downtown from Allston on the Green Line. For context, 1400 would get you something very very nice with parking.

My personal favorites are Davis and JP. That's what I'd do if I didn't have my reasons for being further out.

These pictures give me great hope for my own future attic bathroom. The space around the shower is just the same in my house and I'm thrilled to see someone actually fit a tub in there.

I'm a little curious, however, about how the skylight works with the moisture of the shower. No problems with that?
