I am a 20-something and live in 1st ring suburb of Pittsburgh, about 15 minutes into the city. I have a 1200 square foot house, with a brand new kitchen and two bedrooms. We have a decent sized yard with a garden plenty big enough for two people. It could be a lot bigger if we were planning in staying in our house longer. We only paid 60,000 for our house and the only improvements we made were cosmetic. Pittsburgh has a community apiary and a great urban farming organization. Pittsburgh is great because it's small but has lots of cultural organization and activities, safe, and best of all cheap!

This makes me so glad that I'm a teacher-librarian in PA where we are unionized.

Non-chunky soup in an insulated thermos is easy to drink while standing, same goes for smoothies (add protein powder to make it extra filling). Alton Brown did an episode on energy bars with some great recipes. I love this granola bar recipe.

I wouldn't paint the room red. I think that a navy blue would be a more original and striking choice. Blue would also go with the trim much better. Another choice might be a deep green. I feel like everyone paints their dining room red, you should strike out and be different!

Fry them in butter. Or margarine if you're vegan.

Top with caramelized onions and mushrooms or guacamole.

I have a very small kitchen so I only have a few things on my counter top. Microwave, toaster, salt and pepper grinders, kitchen aid mixer and my TARDIS cookie jar.

Of course I also have a line of open shelving and rail system holding a ton of stuff on the opposite wall as the counter, so it's a little cluttered despite it's size.

@LitNerd I can tell you that teaching in an old school is incredibly difficult. The electrical systems can't handle the number of computers needed which results in dangerous electrical situations. Also, they are often not properly climate controlled. The school where my mom teaches is so old that snow actually comes in during winter and lands on the students in class.

I have one that I put up in the gap between the lower cabinet and the stove (so it's hidden). We don't use it for lids though, we use it for sheet pans and muffin pans. It is perfect because it is right next to the stove and keeps everything organized. Our lids didn't really fit, but the sheet pans fit like a charm.
