For online retailers, I'm pretty partial to Sew Mama Sew. For shopping locally, you can't beat Iowa City's own Home Ec Workshop!

Watch those berries closely. I picked a bunch a few years back that were at their height of freshness, and thankfully I checked one out before popping it into my mouth, because it was teeming with tiny red mites.

My vegetarian marshmallow recipe calls for xanthan gum (as the "magical" ingredient), and it certainly worked!

@fancyd, I've made a coconut ice cream using coconut milk and maple syrup that was vegan and whipped up really nicely in my ice cream maker, so you should be okay to make it without it.

If you've never tried it before, just once I must implore that you put a schmear of cream cheese inside your grilled cheese. It gives a depth of flavor and zing that is really hard to match any other way.

We also "butter" the outside of our grilled cheese sandwiches with a very thin layer of mayo rather than butter. It loses its mayo taste, and crisps the bread up beautifully, without tearing up the bread like butter might (although we always leave a stick of butter in a covered dish on the counter, for spreading on toast or whatever).

I love the people of Iowa, too, especially when we're able to sift through all of the snots from Chicago who invade our fair city every year, because they couldn't get into a state school.

I'm in Iowa City, and while we're not at the diversity level of Chicago, we're certainly doing quite a bit better than the rest of the state! Plenty of culture, too.

I'm so glad I live in Iowa, where I bought an entire bedroom set in the Broyhill Sculptra line for $80, rather than paying $225 for one piece, that doesn't even include the mirror. Wowza.

Can we get the actual source of the first photo? It looks like it was picked up from an aggregated tumblr.

I know college students' budgets are pretty tiny, but do we really need to encourage them to start buying blatant knockoffs so early? Let them admire Eames rockers from afar until they're done with school and can save up for the real deal.

My friend Mark has been experimenting with making his own wooden handlebars as well. His look pretty great!

I'd be interested to follow this thing through to see if the laptop was actually stolen, or if this is just one huge commercial for some software that the "victim" wrote.

In Iowa, we've got a local winery/distillery called Cedar Ridge, and they've got the most fantastic dark sipping rum I've ever tasted. They age it in Templeton Rye casks, so it's dark from those rather than from fakey "spices". It's delicious.

I've got a Sony eReader, and I love it. I had thought about opting for a Kindle, but in the end it seemed way too restrictive. The eReader can read just about any format, and I'm able to check eBooks out of my local library with it, whereas the library system isn't compatible with the Kindle.

Oooh, I would love this piece. I've got a Sculptra bedroom set and sideboard, but not this one. Unfortunately, I don't think I could justify paying more for this one item than I did for all four of the other ones combined.
