I use it to clean my dog's food and water bowls. He's a slobbery, slimy-drooled creature and his water bowl at the end of the day is just a notch below gelatin. I scour it out with a bit of baking soda on a paper towel and it cuts right through the goo and rinses away cleanly. Dish soap doesn't even begin to touch it. I buy the big 2# boxes. Also great for scouring soap scum from the tub!

Ice-cold chocolate ganache pie ( only 3 ingredients! good chocolate chips melted in heated cream, cooled, and whipped with a hit of vanilla) in a cinnamon butter graham crust with fresh whipped cream brings the constant noise level in my house of boys2men to an absolute sparkling stillness. Just eating, and swallowing. It borders on the supernatural.

I make a 1/4 batch of egg-less cookie dough, roll it up in a thin cylinder of parchment, and freeze *specifically* for adding to ice cream! My kids have food allergies and I often can't buy safe ready-made. It is not for baking, only for dicing and mixing in. Soooo good.
Sugar, brown sugar, butter, vanilla, flour, teensy bit of baking soda, and then chocolate chunks or bits. Good for midnight freezer munching, too.

I just told my husband last night that the 80's are coming back in style, design-wise. I've seen teal couches, wallpapered light switches, and more. I predicted that southwest style would be cool again. Now if I could just predict the stock market.....

Wow. I guess I need to list my Domino mags on ebay or something. I never knew there was this level of fandom---my Mom bought me a gift subscription so they just started showing up in the mailbox. I liked looking at them at the time but do not love love them. Didn't recycle them, just shelved them next to the Design New Englands......hmmm.
wonder what they're worth.....

Thought of another thing that lives in the freezer from time to time: dead fish.
Our pet store has a policy of fish replacement if new ones die within 7 days. Happens sometimes. Store wants 'em back, if I need to I will freeze them if I can't return in a day or 2.

Dust Mite Control! If your children (or you) are allergic to dust mites, you can place wrapped stuffed animals & pillows in the freezer for 24 hours if the items are not washable.
The deep freeze will kill them. It is not a substitute for washing; their waste still remains, which is the allergenic part. It is eerie seeing teddy in a freezer bag but it really helps in the mite fight.

I was a Martha junkie in the late 80's; stayed true throughout the 90's. When she started "branding" everything from glue to paint to pots and pans, and bounced from store to store (kmart, macy's, HD) I had to say goodbye.
I am loyal to a <good> brand. She wrecked hers by market saturation.

We were in the same boat, needed one, hated the look of it. Bought it anyway.
I can not sing its praises enough! We eventually had 3 children. it went up when we needed it, went into storage between toddlers.
It has saved our Christmas tree from puppies, it has blocked off areas of our house during renovations, etc etc etc. I say go for it. Safe is not always attractive, but it does blend in after a while.

Love love love this thread---stumbled on it searching AT for "guava."
My husband Must dip his grilled cheese sandwich into a glass of chocolate milk, a childhood habit. I used to have to leave the room when he did that but I'm ok with it now.
I can not tolerate fried eggs (gag gag gag) but I love scrambled. Go figure.

Guittard! Great selection of meltable discs and other chocolatey goodness. You can buy the chips at Whole Foods and the discs online.
Peanut and almond allergy friendly.

Love this company, my family cannot do chocolate that has crossed paths with peanuts. They do process almonds but keep it separate enough that my kids can eat anything that is not labeled "may contain"

Lifesavers for restaurant waits! I'd pick up a few in advance of a family outing and tuck them in my bag for when the little ones' patience started wearing thin. 3 young kids, I tell you: Best bribe ever. Plus they loved getting good behavior comments at the exit!

I do a whole turkey breast in my oval slow cooker, bone-in. It always comes out moist and tender! Usually I do a dry spice rub and add a little broth or water to the bottom. Sometimes I'll put a few veggies on the bottom too, carrots/celery/onions. Right before serving the breast goes under the broiler quickly for that nice crispy skin action if I feel like it.
Makes a great dinner plus lots of leftovers for sandwiches and salads for the week, the bones go in my freezer for stock day.

Re: Pennies, let's be nice to each other......
I don't hand out pennies, I let kids scoop up as much as they can hold themselves and yes, there's other coin in there too.
I grew up quite poor and Loved the Money Lady on our block---once I scooped up over a dollar. That was pretty special to me. To each their own, I guess.

Figure out how much you are willing to budget for halloween items, then go to the bank for rolled coin. A big bowl of pennies with some nickels thrown in for extra bling is not a huge expense and kids will love you!

Love it! My 2 cents: Olive oil will remove the stickers without harming the finish. Use your fingers or a terry cloth, saturate the sticker and simply rub off, may take a couple tries.
Keep the original finish, add a back cushion to coordinate with room, maybe a seat cushion but make sure it is the tied-on kind.
Lastly, I'd drill a couple hidden 3/4" holes (paddle bit) in a row along the back for when it turns into a hiding spot. (Ounce of prevention , I have 3 kids) Lucky you for the heirloom!

I made an amazing spur of the moment kale thingie recently after a farmer's market impulse buy of 2 bunches of beautiful curly kale, some local smoked bacon, and a bunch of red onion scallions:
Fry up a mess of diced bacon until almost too crispy (use a really big pan), add a big handful of thinly sliced oniony things, then add washed, dried, and finely sliced kale a bit at a time until it all fits and wilts down. Finish with a couple dashes of cider vinegar, salt, pepper, and red chili flakes. I called it the garden of good and evil (apologies to the book of the same name...) oh, so good. And evil.

When I was in high school and college, I worked at Village Fruit in funky Allston Massachusetts back in the early/mid 80's. We had a rotating obscene fruit and veggie exhibit that we hid in the bathroom medicine cabinet. It was always a laugh to open it and see the new "figure studies". Thanks for the blast from the past!

We make our own, severe peanut & tree-nut allergies prevent us from store-bought.
I'm getting really good at it! Tough to source many of the dried fruits---most have crossed paths with nuts along the way, allergy is so severe that invisible residue=life-threatening.
Saving for a dehydrator!
BTW, a wee bit of applesauce in the recipe will add a softer, chewier bite that is kid-friendly.
