MapQuest is also available for the iPhone. It also requires a data connection. But given the price (free) its a great option for turn-by-turn voice GPS directions. I also appreciate that you're not loading hundreds of MB of maps on your phone to use it. With all of the free apps, I find you're better off finding the address of a business in other tools (google, yelp, etc) and then pasting into your GPS--but that's a fine tradeoff for the price.

You were absolutely right to be concerned. I'm impressed that someone so early in their "rental career" not only saw the warning signs but thought to ask this renting-savvy community. Western Union is absolutely the big tip-off. I agree with the other poster who recommended contacting your school's housing office. Good luck!

When I lived in NYC, we had casement windows as well. The windows had screens that were affixed with brackets to the casement. The screens had a small sliding "square" so you could open the latch and the window. You can see a decent shot of the windows & screens here: http://flic.kr/p/9Wrp9n. Good luck!

The more professionally you ask, the better. Provide a "sketchup" diagram of what you want to do, a clear breakdown of what you'll be doing, and a detailed list of what you'd like your landlord to finance. Finally, I would have a few references from your architect/builder life available in case your landlord wants them. Good luck!

I completely understand your dilemma, and I think other folks who have tried to be helpful don't fully understand having a meat and potatoes dad. I tried throwing a little trader joe's curry powder into a stir fry for my dad back in the 90's and heard about it for years. I'm assuming that's what you mean when you say "no spices." That said, here's what I would recommend:

1. A LOT of puréed veggie soups (squash, broccoli, etc). While I'm not an expert, I know there are vegan-friendly ways to achieve the "creamy" effect.
2. Rice options. I would make a batch of "fried" rice (no eggs, of course), with various veggies.
3. Risotto. A nice, mellow mushroom risotto is a great option.
4. Don't forget the portabello mushroom--it has a great meaty feel to even the heartiest meat eater.
5. Stuff your veggies--sautee some rice in a dad-friendly sauce (I typically use tomato, but something else would do) and stuff it into a veggie and bake. If bell peppers are too acidic, squashes can also work well.

Be willing to go out once or twice and give both you and Dad a break!

Good luck!

My two cats have been using the Petmate for years and its worked well. Prior to this, one of my cats had recurring urinary tract issues. The fountain has definitely helped. One cat drinks from the main bowl, the other only drinks at the very "top" of the fountain. Yes, it's important to clean it regularly--but isn't that true of anything your fur-covered roommates use on a regular basis?

I'm a huge audiobook fan (learned to love them when I had a long commute). Most public libraries also offer emedia (including ipod and mp3 player-friendly audiobooks) that you can borrow for free. I canceled my audible membership once the library audio books were made available for ipods.

I have some toaster cookware from B3 (I see they have a similar set for $14.95 (http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?SKU=12299591). Not only are they great for toaster baking, but I use them in my regular oven to prepare different dishes at the same time.

I don't know if Sieggo will see this, but for her drop ceiling challenge, they now have pressed tin style tiles for those ceilings: a quick search brought up: http://www.thetinman.com/ but there might be even cheaper "faux" options. I saw this at a cafe near my home recently, and I thought it looked great--it completely distracted me from the fact that it was a dropped ceiling.

As for my challenge (http://madmaison.com), I live in my grandmother's old house. We're changing a lot, but money is a constraint. She installed a 1/2 bath on the main level a few years before she passed away, and put in a faux-marble beige sink and a beige toilet. They work fine, but they're awful.

I would love to get an eReader, but I'm waiting for one that can read multiple formats. I won't get a kindle b/c it won't allow loading of library eBooks.

Do You Plan to Purchase an eReader This Year? Survey | Apartment Therapy Unplggd

I've been reading this series with interest since they started it last year. This episode made me cringe. A few years of reading apartment therapy and watching the occasional HGTV episode made me realize how horrible this designer was:
1. There were plenty of options that wouldn't violate the lease terms to improve the radiator and A/C situation the client hates. A bookcase on one side of the radiator; a sheer curtain over both--something.
2. $450 on a bed that someone who is over 25 has said he will sleep on every night vs the over $1500 sisal rug (plus $500 for installation)? At least 50% of that 10k budget should have gone to obtaining the most comfortable sofa bed on the planet.
3. There was nothing creative in the objects. Everything was from West Elm, CB2, etc. I'm all for using some chain pieces in my space, but not exclusively. Plus, you hire a designer to help you find those unique pieces that you can't.
4. Theoretically, this designer knew the tale would be told in the NY times. So is this his best foot he's putting forward? If not, shame on him.

However, I do also agreed that if you're a client who chooses to not engage in the process you often get what you put into it.

mdevans is absolutely right. The ability to check out eBooks and audio books from your library is wonderful--and this is my main gripe with the Kindle. Other readers (like the Sony) allow you to put those loaned books on your eReader device. This is especially galling when you learn that Amazon owns mobi pocket, which is one of the book formats available to check out from the library (but can't put on your Kindle). Imagine how long the iPod's popularity would have lasted if you could only put the music you bought through iTunes on your iPod. Would netflix still be around if I could only play their DVDs on a proprietary DVD player? I can't commit to an eReader until they've standardized formats a little more.
