I just got back from five months of around-the-world travel. Three invaluable things that I packed:

Copies of my passport, ID, and credit cards. My wallet was pickpocketed and these made getting replacements so much easier.

In places outside "western" countries: sunscreen! Real, safe, effective sunblock is almost unheard of elsewhere.

A refillable water bottle, such as a Camebak or Nalgene. It gets expensive to buy bottled water and many places abroad don't recycle.

Is there a way for you to just remove the soffit? Exposing the pipes will make the space less stuffy and make it feel more like a loft!

If you prefer that your mattress is a little higher than the platform, you can purchase a bunky board for under your mattress. Bunky boards are about 2" thick. I would not recommend plywood because it does not have the give, or bounce, that you want from a bed base.

I think there is a big difference between nudity and nakedness, a difference which usually delineates my own level of comfort. If the body is rendered lovingly, with an appreciation for its shape and variation from other bodies, then it's a nude. If the body is meant to be gazed at like a dress I want in a store window -- as a commodity or sort of tool -- then it is naked. I feel that the individuals who feel uncomfortable with nude art would mistakenly classify the pieces we're discussing as naked.
