This reminds me of something my uncle made for my grandma in the seventies. He used pieces of broken green bottles (not the safest, but the final product was hung out of reach of small hands) to make a Christmas tree on a canvas. The tree was wired from the back with lights, like Martha's star bursts. He also used really gaudy earrings (think chunky gold ones with lots of fake jewels) as ornaments, and a star shaped brooch at the tree's top. The whole thing twinkled when it was plugged in. Not as nondenominational as the version above, perhaps, but appealing in a kitschy way. It also had a really wide gold frame, setting off the white background nicely.
