Actually not all of the razed buildings are being discarded. There is actually a huge entire secondary resale market for traditional Chinese homes, which are actually broken down, transported offsite for repair and restoration and then resold to wealthy Chinese buyers. Some are turned into stunning restaraunts - the one in Beijing I often eat at is amazing. Have a read here: Modernizing Traditional Chinese Homes in Beijing The New York Times 7.24.08 |

Not a bad little introduction article to Antique "Yoke-back" Chinese Chairs though I seriously doubt the ones in the photo are antique. Not only is it really hard to find sets of 4 or 6 or more but even so, most o the sot wood provincial ones easily available today are either reproductions or heavily modified - often built from several damaged pairs. Should be no problem with the Chinese drum stools in putting them outside. We have had tons of them out in the open for ages and never really had any problems with them (knock on wood) ;) Quick History: Chinese Garden Stools Retrospect |

You can also try the experts guide to Chinese Antiques at http://www.antique-chinese-furniture.com/blog/ for more books on Chinese Antiques and Asian Design. Look under the bookstore section - there is a pretty comprehensive list on books about Chinese antiques. The categories are a bit messy but its a pretty darn comprehensive list. There are tons of design books there. Its basically an amazon store but at least everything has already been found for you. Chinese Antiques in Modern & Contemporary Homes |
