Looks a lot like the cabin my grandparents used to own in upstate NY (major nostalgia trip). Even the painting of the windswept pine kinda looked like my grandma's style -- she does very bright, gestural landscapes.

If that place is built anything like my grands' though, I can see why he might want to renovate at least a little bit: no sound proofing! none! I remember being sent to bed as a kid and listening to every word of the TV a floor below me. You know, SOUND is something so rarely addressed on this site (smell, too, I suppose). So sometimes, renovation's a good idea, if it can be done sympathetically.

My family has a history of repairing caning. My grandfather was paralyzed when he was quite young, and he took up doing skilled repair work for a living (he recaned seats, rewove holes in suits, things like that). He taught my mom, and recently my roommate's possession of two broken caned chairs gave her an opportunity to teach me. I took them home over Christmas, and recaned them as my Christmas present to my roommate. By working next to my mom we finished both of them in three days. Roomie and I now have two really nice kitchen chairs and I got some solid bonding time with my mom.

It's not as difficult as people think it is, but after three days your hands do hurt. And boy, does it take time! It makes sense that recaners charge a standard $1.50 a hole. Now I'm on the lookout for real (perferably broken) caned furniture, because as long as it has the holes I can fix it, and you can sometimes get a pretty good deal from folks who don't want to take the time to find a recaner / don't want to pay for the fix.

For a cheaper solution than vodka (really, who can afford that?), get a big bottle of isopropyl alchohol from your drug store. A quart is usually around a dollar. It works wonderfully to remove the sticky residues from price-stickers, and typically won't harm your items, where some of the acidic recommendations on this list might. You can also mix it 50/50 with water, which will remove some residues that one or the other won't remove alone.

I lived in a co-op situation in Texas with a whole bunch of foreign students (mostly western European). When we were moving to a new building, the "new landlord" had us fill out their application, even though we were still renting through our Co-op agency. They had a place for SSNs, and several of my friends started to fill it out. My dad retired from Social Security after 30 years recently, and he drilled it into me that the only person who should ever see your SSN is your employer, and maybe, *maybe*, your doctor. I had them black out their numbers with ink, and we had no problem renting the place.

'course, it helps when a multi-million dollar company is actually the one doing the renting, but really, they shouldn't have any need for your SSN.

I certainly wouldn't paint them! They're gorgeous. It's a bit hard to tell your style from the one picture, but any colors associated with "craftsman" style would go with that wood tone, as would many paler blue-green-grays. With that kind of rosette trim, a historical color (many paint lines have colors drawn from specific historical houses) would be a great bet.

My mom's a professional basketmaker, but she tends to do a more rustic style with flat-reed. One of my proudest possessions is a laundry basket she made me. I'm totally sending her this post though, she'd love them!

I can tell you, my dorm bed never looked that good. This is a neat idea, and looks cute for those of us with small spaces that need to be versatile.

For the record, if you're having an allergic or other reaction to the mold, "at least it's dead" is not a particularly good final solution. The mold itself may be dead, but the spores aren't necessarily killed by bleach, and "killing" the mold itself can cause the spores to become air-borne.

ANY scrubbing you do in a moldy situation should be done with excellent ventilation and a fine-pored mask on your face (the professionals have Hepa-masks, you need something finer-grained than a typical dust mask and it needs to be taped to your face. I'm sadly not kidding).

Mold's no joking matter -- it can make you really sick. Is there no fan? Or is it just broken / clogged? This is something that should be dealt with ASAP, before you get sicker. (for some of us, with major mold allergies, this would be grounds for breaking the lease. ... no matter how Idyllic)

I have a much simpler bed along the same idea: dark wood with a colonial-English aesthetic, curvy top. Mine doesn't have the beautiful spindle work, but I'm a grad student working on a tight budget. Since at the time I got it I couldnt' afford a "matching set" (and I'm not really "matchy-matchy" anyways), I found end tables at GoodWill which I painted white, and a walnut chest on Craigslist. It's ok that the bed is glossy and the walnut chest is a little more matte; what mattered more was the lines (classic bow-front) and I added some amber glass knobs from Lowes for punch and sparkle. Find a piece with the right "lines" and you can dress it up (glass knobs, etc) or down (paint!) to fit your aesthetic. Good luck!

What about a really soft robins-egg blue for the walls? It'd play up the wood-tones (and the brick, although that'd look really good white too) -- and it'd be plenty bright.

My mother announced to me over the phone one day that she had framed and hung one of the drawings I'd brought home from my intro-drawing class in college. Was it the still-life with squash (why is there always squash? another topic...)? No, it was the three-nudes I'd done as an over-lapping pose. So now there are three, fairly stylized black-ink male nudes on the dining room wall. It was briefly over the mantle.

There is a huge difference between nudity and Nekkidness. Nudity is about line, form, and volume. I'll admit to briefly dating one of the male models in my drawing class, but he wasn't even cute to me until he put his pants on and started talking about his interests.

My win was last summer, when I was attempting to furnish my new apartment on a tight budget: a simple, walnut chest of drawers, bow-front, clean lines. No idea who the maker was, but its classic and the perfect size for my small bedroom. Guy wanted $80... totally worth it, and he helped load it into my CRV, followed me to my apartment, and helped me get it up the stairs! ... but yeah, it took watching CL everyday at work (thank goodness for data-entry).

maggskh -- are you looking for any copy of Crime and Punishment or one in particular? Alibris.com has many copies, from $2 up (with $4 shipping). They're a great place to find any book you're looking for, in editions Amazon doesn't have quite often. I always check there before buying on Amazon, because sometimes the prices are ridiculously better.

Maybe it's my monitor, but doesn't the third image have navy blue, and the fifth have cream in it? And I feel like I see rooms with sky-blue all the time on this site.

The one thing that many of the colors you have on your list have in common are yellow under-tones, which can make people feel icky in certain lights. But categorically banning colors, especially as broadly worded as "pale yellow" makes no sense at all.
