this is the kind of place that makes me think i could be okay with living in the suburbs. i love the stereo cabinet & so much orange.

i like the simplicity of the windows but think curtains would look much classier than blinds.

a little pricey, but all recycled & both pillow insert & fleece cover are machine washable. it has made him very happy & largely keeps him off the furniture.

AY in BK, We bought the medicine cabinet a couple of summers ago. I remember it was the last one in stock & other products in that line of bath stuff were no longer available, so they may not make it anymore. --Jessica

MXM, The old couch & chair were awesome, but pretty beat. They went to student-friends starting a new life together. The new couch is actually fabric, not leather.

mlme, We debated for a really long time about the Summit fridge. We looked & read reviews & just didn't know what to do. Though it's a little shorter & smaller, we ended up going with the non-commercial Summit instead of the commercial Vestfrost because 1) we liked the shape of the handles a lot better & 2) the non-commercial one qualified for an Energy Star rebate. Also, pretty important--the sides of the Summit don't have the ugly eggshell texture that so many stainless-fronted fridges have (& which you wouldn't know about unless you saw them in person). I guess this only matters if the sides will be visible. The appliance store we bought the fridge from said they sell them mainly to hospitals & that all reports have been good. The fridge is *really* quiet. It's way smaller than what we had before, but we've adjusted, even with a farm share.

As far as the Premier range goes, that was there when we moved in. The doorway into the kitchen is only 27" so we're stuck with a 24" range. But from our research, it seems like the Premier is a good option unless you can afford to go way up to a Viking. The burners have a nice range (really low to really high flame). The oven can be a little finicky though. We have to keep a thermometer in it, because sometimes it gets up to temperature really fast & other times it takes 20 minutes to get to 350. Also, you have to use smaller cookie sheets or the temperature spikes up (this seems to be a matter of the air needing to circulate on all sides--pretty normal, but something to know).

Porch furniture is from Ikea.

Hi barents (wondering if you too teach in the WP at BU?): We used Mythic Paint for the cabinets. The color is India Ink. I can't remember if the finish was semi-gloss or high-gloss, though I'd probably go with high since cabinets show water drips easily. You can buy Mythic at Tags in Porter Square.

Hi ronaj: Ceiling light fixture came with the room & the floor lamp was a hand-me-down from an old landlord. You can see the bathroom if you click "Enter House Tour."

ju: we bought the bed in 2006. it's survived 3 moves, though it's now glued together b/c with each reassembly it got more rickety. now we'll have to saw it apart if we ever want to get it out of the room. the typewriter poster is available here for 8 pounds:

burnttoast: The tub is painted with regular paint (Mythic in a mustardy color we had matched to an old seltzer bottle). We removed the feet & painted those white, then painted the tub while it was upside down in the middle of the kitchen floor. 3-4 coats over a more toxic primer (Zinsser Bulls Eye I think). The painting was easy, the tub maneuvering through a 23"-wide door less so.

lstephan: The bricks are really glossy, so they've definitely been treated with something. They were like that when we moved in, so I'm not sure.

roxy72: Just one little bathroom, very far from the bedroom! Not a perfect set-up, but this building is weird & old.

Hi Jkb, We do have a small TV for watching movies, but it didn't make it into the pictures. It's in the lounge, opposite the daybed.

Hi everyone. Thanks for the comments. Here are a few responses:

mountainkate: The place is definitely 770 sq. ft., but it does feel bigger. We moved from an apartment that was only 600 sq. ft., but more or less a studio, & this feels way more than one room bigger, maybe because there aren't books everywhere & the kitchen table isn't right next to the sofa.

bepsf: The bed against the windows isn't ideal. But when the bed was against the long wall (our first choice), it was on top of the heating register & the room was freezing in the winter.

ricestein: We have two different shelf depths--the corner set-up has 12" shelves & the slimmer tower beside the window has 10" shelves. Apparently, Rakks makes brackets to support up to 24" shelves. I can't imagine what that looks like. But the system is really strong & flexible.

ZeliNine: Clem is just 2, from Tennessee. But there are plenty of brown Southern mutts around Cambridgeport. Maybe you met one of them?

KarltonKelly: We like Dyson vacuums. We balked at the price (though we'd had a $40 vacuum that stopped working after a couple of months), but were kind of sold on Dyson after 1) a Bissell saleswoman tried to demonstrate how much better her vacuum was & it actually didn't pick up the sand & pet fur she'd dumped on the store rug, & 2) this dad & little girl came up to us in Target, & the little girl said that what comes out of the vacuum is stuff you don't even know you have in your house. It's true! Mieles are supposed to be really nice too. I think they're more expensive though.

I would say that this section tells us not very much about Lisbeth, but lots about Larsson & his compulsion to inundate us with unnecessary details. Do we need to know which processor or what size screen Lisbeth's laptop has? It's not even relevant to her hacking. The IKEA passage & many others annoy me, but I keep reading the books...

Nora Ephron gets Larsson's tic just right in a recent New Yorker spoof:

hygebeorht: we have the same dilemma--tiny bathroom, clawfoot tub, pretty fabric curtain for the outside, but b/c we don't want to block the natural light from the window that's beside the tub, we're still using vinyl liners b/c they're the only transparent ones we can find.

at least Target usually has the EVA ones, which are PVC free & don't off-gas so much. still i'd LOVE to find a transparent-ish fabric liner to use instead.
