Hi Decogirl. Actually finding a stump is easy if you know where to look. Local conservation areas where they regularly cut trees is a good place to look. Side of the road ... same thing. But if you just want to get one immediately without hunting just look up firewood suppliers in your area. They'll sell you a stump and cut it to whatever size you want for cheap. And they don't need to be kiln dried at all. Just leave them outside or inside to dry for a month or two depending on how old/wet the wood is. An easy way to tell when it's dry is to weigh it at the beginning of its drying process and weigh it every week after. When it stops dropping in weight ... it's dry enough to finish. ~ karen (the art of doing stuff ... stump # 8)

Thanks all! I have a strange affinity for my basket too. I don't know what it is about it, but it makes me calm for some bizarre reason. If anyone has any questions about making their own email away ... just hit the contact button on my website. ~ karen

Stephy - I'm not sure what kind of kitty litter you're using, but kitty litter has no scent to it. You *can* buy scented litter, but that's not what I'm recommending you use. I should also say, just so everyone knows ... I never, ever recommend anything I haven't personally done myself and KNOW works. There's enough of that out in blog land, I figure. So give it a shot. Works. ~ karen!

Hi all! That first picture is my foyer from my blog The Art of Doing Stuff.

Here's a link to my post on my furry chair ... http://www.theartofdoingstuff.com/before-after-how-to-recover-a-chair-in-5-minutes/

And here's a link that if I remember correctly, sources the rest of the stuff including the metal table. (which I got at HomeSense, the Canadian equivalent of HomeGoods)

OH! And by the way ... my house doesn't have a skylight either. Sometimes I go into the coop and look up just because I can. Then I go back into my dark house and think about knocking a hole in the roof. :) ~ k

Now This is a Chicken Coop!

Hi all - Thanks for the compliments. To address some of your points, the coop gets dirty on the inside (the shavings) but the shavings get changed every few days so the interior of the coop stays pretty much the same. I mean, chickens don't poo sideways so ... it's not like they can cover the walls with th stuff.:) The run, well yes ... it's filled with chicken crap. And the coop is 80% ventilation with hardware cloth, so nope ... it doesn't get hot or smelly. Are 1000 chickens smelly? Yup. Are 4? No. 90% of their pooping in the coop goes on while they're asleep in their perch, so under their perch I have a poop board. Every other day I just pull it out, scrape the board off and put it back. I tend to research things to within an inch of their life, and my #1 concern was having a functional chicken coop that was easy to clean and comfortable for the hens. #2 was having something that blended with my small, urban backyard. I highly recommend getting a few hens! Really fun and fulfilling.

Hi Jose A! Sorry ... I wasn't referring to your post. This particular dollar store glass is fine! (Dollarama in Canada) No sharp edges, no thinner than glass from a regular picture frame. Thanks! - karen

To everyone who seems to be concerned about the thin glass in this project: Regular glass does not "explode". Glass does not break from heat. It breaks from uneven heating or from very fast temperature changes. So unless you plan on heating up your fire pit and then jumping into your freezer with it you should be fine. Also, thin glass is LESS susceptible to uneven heating and cooling and is therefore less likely than thick glass to break. Perhaps before you judge, criticize and call people "crazy" you should do a little research. I'm actually fine with being called crazy ... just do it for the right reasons.

I do not post anything on my website that I haven't tested and researched. That indeed would be irresponsible. Hope that clears everything up. Thanks! - karen

Holy crap, I gasped at every room. I LOVE the string chandelier. LOVE it. I've noticed even the major magazines are starting to get away from the "perfectly appointed" rooms in favour of a little more personality. For about 5 years the rooms in most decorating magazine looked like they were all owned by the same (boring) person. Glad to see the change. LOVE THE STRING CHANDELIER.

Hah! That makes me laugh. I just painted my whole kitchen white last week. Exposed brick wall and all. I was nervous and I love it. I'll bet Kerri is shocked by how much she loves her white kitchen too. And if she's like me, wonders WHY she waited so long to do it. Why, why why? Great job Kerri. Really pretty.

I love a coffee table that has room for a bunch of crap on it. (... and by that I mean room for a display of carefully arranged objects that appear to have been randomly placed without any thought whatsoever) I'm still working on that one. Honestly though ... it's so much nicer to have a table you feel like you can put your feet on. A glass or lucite coffee table may look nice, but a rustic wood one also feels nice.

I have a nude line drawing over my fireplace. (O.K. ... it's a copy of a Matisse I bought at Ikea ... but still ...)

My brother-in-law snickered at it one night during a family dinner. At which point my 6 year old step-son said "Uh, it's art. Duh."

HAH! That cracked me up. Still does!

I think I don't like sink #1. In fact, I'm pretty positive I don't. Nope ... don't like it at all. I think the problem with concrete isn't necessarily the cost, but getting someone who is skilled at doing it.
