Thanks everyone for the ideas for my living room! I totally missed that my question had been posted, so my bad for not chiming in earlier. The new floor went in late last week and we love it. We like the look, and also like that it’s easier to keep clean since we have a baby who will soon be crawling around.

@Parnassus Dang, I wish this question had gotten posted before the floor went in! Saving the old carpet to test various sizes is a GREAT idea. Now that the floors are down, the best idea I’d managed was to tape out various size areas on the floor, like @goat suggested.

@minilauren I’m not insulted, but your original suggestion was a little over the top since it’s not really feasible for us to redo the entire design plan! :) I know sectionals may not be the most stylish thing, but ours is comfortable and we like it. As for hard floors being cold, we live on the gulf coast, so to me that is actually a good thing 9-10 months of the year. To each their own, right?

Like a few others have recommended, I don't want to rush into something, so for now we're living rug-free and I'm keeping my eyes out for the right solution.

The best part of this is that I looked at the first picture and thought "that looks just like a Georgia Tech dorm room." When I saw that's where they are, I had to laugh. Nice job girls, this looks way better than any of my dorm rooms at GT ever did. Then again, I'm just a design-challenged engineer... ;)

Thanks for all the suggestions so far! I was thinking we needed a big wall unit just to fill it up, but after looking around some more and seeing your suggestions, I think a wide credenza could be really nice. Unfortunately I don't have the skills or the tools to build something myself, so I'd need to hire someone if we went with a custom piece.

To answer a couple questions that came up in the comments --

We don't have a specific budget. We found a couple things we liked in the $3500 range, and while we could spend that if we had to...I was hoping to find something at least somewhat more affordable, say $2000ish. Obviously less is better, but we can spend some decent money if that's where we end up.

I know the room looks like a wreck with crap everywhere. A lot of it got put there when we moved in and hasn't gotten cleaned up yet. We were in the midst of cleaning/decluttering/organizing when I took this photo, hence the mess. :)

The guitars are my husband's and have already found a home in a different room.

The things hanging from the ceiling are the ceiling fan and light pulls, so they're not really movable unless I never want to adjust the fan. We live in Houston and it's crazy hot here, so the ceiling fan stays!

Good Questions

My husband and I bought a 2800 sq ft house last year. Our jobs are in the suburbs, so we live in the suburbs. Though it'd be more fun to live in the city, having a spacious house is an advantage of suburban life that we chose to take advantage of.

Before the house, we lived in an 800 sq ft apartment. That was fine, but felt a bit cramped (mainly due to the layout).

Sure, our new house has way more space than we need, but I make no apologies -- I LOVE IT. Nothing feels cramped or cluttered, the layout is awesome, and we have plenty of space to do whatever the heck we want. Even as we "grow into it" when we start having kids, there will always be enough space.

Our kitchen is very much like that (espresso cabinets, SS appliances, and beige tile backsplash, though we do have a much lighter countertop). We built our house, and chose neutrals for the permanent stuff in the interest of resale value. But then we painted the walls a bright teal.

I love it, and all we'd have to do to return it to its totally neutral state would be paint again.
