I think it'd depend on the landlord. Growing up we lived in a house for 7 years and my mom painted every room. I don't believe she had direct permission, but when the landlord came by I remember him being happy with the 'updates.' When we moved out we offered to re-paint it all white, and he gave them the choice of $400 less back from the security deposit or we could paint it ourselves. They ended up going with the $400 less back.

My current landlord (who is also my downstairs neighbor) and the place we are moving into next month, there is no way I'd paint, since they're both restrictive about the use of things like screws. I'd be nervous about them. But my very first apartment had ugly chipping cabinets... I painted them red... without permission. The landlord complimented the upgrades on move out. So it all depends on the landlord, I think.

When did Apartment Therapy become so hostile? I'm shocked that every new post on AP lately has angry people with nothing else to do but insult someone who has obviously worked hard to improve on there spaces.

Kimberly - great job! I want your $1 store! Mine doesn't have gorgeous turquoise buckets! I love what you did! I organize my pantry about once a year but my husband and kids never know where everything belongs. I am going to use your dry erase method! Thanks for sharing!

We have a chalk painted wood kids table. It's a fantastic look. The table (so we were told) was in need of refinishing, so the previous owners decided to do chalk paint instead. It shows the wood grain still, but definitely refreshes the look. I love the after here!

I'm in the market for a new printer. I appreciate this review/experience! Although I think I'm set on a HP laserjet and have found a few on Amazon.

Echoing everyone else - we're 29 - bought a house in 2006, short sold in 2009 at a huge loss and have $350k+ in student loan debt from getting a doctorate and being underwater in the house... and now we make so very little, we'll be in debt for a lifetime, not exactly willing (or able) to take out more debt.

I have a Daphne too!!! Not a name we see often. Mine's 8 months though. We also have a three year old (fun age!) named Lorelei.

I adore your house! Very well done!

@bagelsmom we got the kitchen for our daughter when she was about 18 months. Now at 3 she still plays with it every day and I suspect she'll continue to play with it for at least 2 more years. Not sure when they're 'over' the play kitchen.

We did not put on the feet until my daughter was 3 (she's very short for her age) and we still haven't put on the magnets for the doors (she couldn't open them in the store and wanted her to be able to open it at home). She probably could do them now with ease, but we have a second little one that will be playing with it in the next 6 months or so, so we decided to keep them off.

We don't have the top, it's been on my wish list for awhile, hopefully they'll still sell it separately (since the price drop is the same as the cost of the top).
