I received one of these as a gift a few years ago. Carol the Shrimp promptly ate Pam the Shrimp (or it may have been the other way around) and went belly up herself soon thereafter.

I occasionally leave my doors unlocked, but only due to my own absentmindedness. I once left my side door, visible from the street (I lived on a corner) wide open all day. I had let my dogs in from the side yard before leaving for work and forgot to shut the door. I got home that evening, thinking I had been robbed, and not one thing was touched. I imagine a potential thief walking in that day, taking one look at my stuff, and deciding it wasn't worth the effort.

Of course I had to do this in the middle of Texas summer, so my air conditioner was running all day. Not terribly energy efficient.

Heather77 - I have the Tobias as my home office chair. Granted, I don't sit in it for extended periods of time, but I find it to be quite comfortable. The seat is molded a bit, so I think that helps.

I have nothing useful to contribute, but have to say that I wish I had a space like that next to my shower. Then I could blow the wall out and actually make it bigger without losing my entryway closet on the other side. Instead, I'm relegated to head injury as I bump the wall trying to shave my legs in my sad little 3x3 shower.

Talk about timing. My 70 year old father was just bitten by an abandoned baby squirrel this weekend. Apparently he had one as a pet when he was a kid, got nostalgic, and tried to pick it up in an effort to help. He and my mother spent the rest of the day at the doctor's office.

As someone who's also in Dallas, Jesse, I'd be curious as to which other antique/thrift shops you recommend - that is if you don't mind the shopping competition...And I agree, Lula B's is amazing!

I, too, was obsessed with rearranging my furniture as a little girl. I would stay up until all hours of the morning pushing around furniture that weighed twice as much as I did - a difficult feat considering the friction created by the lovely '70s green shag carpet I grew up with. I credit my somewhat freakish strength today (despite an appalling lack of exercise) to those days of relentless rearranging.

SAG - I'm thinking of taking a similar route with my hypothetical kitchen renovation (hypothetical because I'm planning it in my head, but am not sure when it will actually come to fruition). Did you choose subway or mosaic backsplash (or another)? Any manufacturer recommendations?

I've camped with my dogs a number of times. My Lab was pretty well suited for it, but my Corgi was tough to handle. Of course that was probably my fault for putting her in a 6 person tent with 3 other people and 3 other dogs. She a little territorial, so she divided each night in the tent between picking fights with the other dogs and sleeping on my friend's face.

As noted above, a long lead clipped around a tree is a good idea for when you don't want them to wander off too far. The first time we went, I was super neurotic about how little the Corgi was compared to other woodland creatures. Especially when she ran off and didn't respond to my calls. Luckily, we found her a ways off, staring and barking at a guy chopping wood.

Never thought of the glow stick, but I'd also recommend a few extra towels so as to keep them from muddying tents and sleeping bags at night.

I have the same fixture in my living room! It's original to the house, which was built in '56. I absolutely love it. In fact, it's pretty much the reason I bought the house, which now sounds completely irrational.

The previous owners had replaced the burnt out round bulbs with candelabra bulbs. It actually kind of works, I guess, because it didn't occur to me until I saw your picture that I should maybe replace those bulbs with round ones...

It looks amazing!

I'm wondering what, if anything, was used to stake down the 2x4s. I attempted to frame out a small garden path with treated lumber in a manner similar to this. It lasted a week before one of the boards warped and opposite corners popped up on each end. Any suggestions in the event I decide to try again?

I have to agree with the dog remarks. Even if the dog is small, it can alert you as to someone outside your house. And getting to know your neighbors is a great idea too. A lot of my neighbors are naturally nosy and we all look out for each other.

I'd also suggest getting a security system which offers the option of having a panic button on a keychain. I know some companies offer such a thing which automatically alerts the police and doesn't go through the whole call-you-then-ask-for-your-password process. This would be helpful not only while you're entering the house, but you could sleep with it on your nightstand.

And if you notice something suspicious outside your house, don't hesitate to call 911. I once fumbled around in the dark with a flashlight at 3 in the morning trying to find the number to my local police station to ask for a drive by because there was a running car with its lights off that I didn't recognize parked directly outside my house. The officer told me that I should just call 911 next time because that sort of thing is considered an emergency situation. You may want to verify this with your local station too, but it could prove useful. I just hesitated to call 911 initially because I felt self conscious about potentially overreacting.

I would advise against relying on mace or pepper spray though - a friend accidentally sprayed herself in the face while sleeping with a can under her pillow. I know, stupid mistake, but it happens!

This is why I've grown to love Living Etc. over the past few months. I've noticed many more affordable options in its last 4 issues than I have in years of Domino or other shelter magazines. The idea of using higher-priced settings as inspiration isn't lost on me, but its nice to see items in magazine layouts which are more accessible.
