lazylizard, what's your flickr name?

to answer your question: not too painful! (although i did have a beer or two during the process.) and the longer you put it off, the harder it's going to be!

what worked for me was turning up my stereo & my brightest lamp. listening to something upbeat makes any dreaded home issue, big or small, much easier.

i angled the lamp so i could see which books were the dustiest (and thus used the least). after that, just shelf by shelf. i also used the cure's "outbox" idea as opposed to donating them right afterwards.

lydster, you are so right! thanks.

for lazylizard (& any fellow book lovers): i suggest using maxwell's questions for the outbox (love it? use it? need it?) to help in the library, too. i am a massive bibliophile & bookworm, but this time last year i sold or donated around 75% of my books. and i'm SO glad i did.

i still have plenty of books, but only the ones i really love.

i've been wanting to do the cure FOREVER and i'm officially signed up, read (or actually re-read) to page 51.

however, as i was reading, i realized that the biggest problem with my place, by far, is its bones. they're bad--like fundamentally unfixable crazy slanty floors bad.

i'm renting (thankfully) and my lease isn't up until the end of august. i've been mulling over moving sooner anyway (there's a place two blocks away that's $400 less/month, with a laundry room, those much coveted even floors, and electric is included in the price!)

basically--advise me. is it worth doing either version of the cure (or some bastardized mish-mash) in a place i want & need to leave, preferably asap?
