New Year's Day birthday here, and it sucks. Sucked getting combined Christmas/birthday presents of the same value that my siblings got just for Christmas. Sucked when I was late teens/twenties because everyone was hungover on the day. Sucks now because no-one remembers. Bitter? Me?!!

I'd go for coloured glass or mirror for the backsplash.

I'd go for white wainscoting and a colour like Benjamin Moore Santorini Blue for the walls. It's a slightly greyed-off pale blue and looks fabulous with black & white.

Here in Australia line-drying is the norm. A lot of us also have lines under cover when necessary. I do still use the dryer when it's pouring rain, or something isn't washed that's needed the next day (teenagers). And I prefer line-dried crunchy towels to dryer-dried ones!

I want a Tranby mirror. It was discontinued in Australia 2 years ago, but I notice you could still get it in the US up to a couple of months ago. I keep checking ebay here, but no luck so far.

I decided against the cutlery tray. It's hard enough getting the kids to unpack the dishwasher as it is, and the cutlery basket is left for whoever gets there second. I can't imagine them even bothering with the tray!

From my research, it is exclusive to the House of Fraser (www.houseoffraser.co.uk). Might be worth emailing them.

This is something a little different. Colours are Sherwin Williams. SW6769 for siding. SW6233 for front door. Trim around windows white. Trim around door black.

It looks like stock standard cheap pine trim. It's not even done properly (the corners should be mitred). I say paint it.

I would use something like this:

You can put a small bowl on top for keys and mail. Maybe even add a skinny vase for flowers. There's a drawer to put mitts and hats in. The bottom shelf could hold shoes. Add a tall mirror on the wall behind it and you're done.

I can't believe so many of you are so judgmental (well, I can actually)! Sounds to me like the poster was talking about a small, reused shopping bag rather than a large, commercial rubbish bag. Everyone's situation is unique to them, and they're the best judge of when they want the rubbish taken out.

The red flower with the light green edges is a coleus. There are many different varieties, so you may want to take a picture with you to the nursery if you want that particular one.

Firstly, I would use one of those grout colouring pens and make the grout white again. I don't think they're terribly expensive.

I would paint the walls (if allowed) a mid-graphite colour. Not too close to black. The medicine cabinet I would paint white.

Shower curtain - do you like vinyl or fabric? For vinyl, I would suggest one of these: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=117044&RN=382 , http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=110264&RN=382. Fabric: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=120594&RN=10 , http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=111886&RN=10.

A nice graphite bathmat, some graphite or black accessories (soap dispenser, cup) and a few succulents on the cistern (someone else came up with that). I also really like the idea of hiding the shower pipe with bamboo.
