This was actually kind of helpful. Confirmed the neighborhoods I want to live in are the right ones for me. I just started apartment hunting in NYC a week ago, and boy is it stressful.

If they aren't going to be used, I can't see anyone actually wanting them for show, even if they are architecturally pleasing. Stairs take up a lot of space and whose going to put up a sign next to them saying "For display purposes only: please do not walk up"? While they look nice, I don't see much purpose.

I say leave it as is. The wood seems nice, and if customization is what you are looking for have fun with the chairs. There are a lot of options there.

The mix of wood finishes looks really great. I'm never sure how black paint, darker stains, and lighter, natural stains on different wooden pieces of furniture complement each other, but you guys did a great job bringing them together in both your bedroom and living room.
