I have the same deal going on over my bathtub in the bathroom. I did what Scoot suggested. The underneath of the soffit is white (ceiling color) and the front is blue (wall color). Underneath the soffit is blue to match the walls as well. I think this looks really sharp and would look really good in your space. It brings out the uniqueness of having the soffit there as opposed to just a flat wall to ceiling like a normal room.

My fridge has stainless doors, but black sides. It's the perfect thing for me. Where it sticks out past the cabinets I can post whatever I want, but I'm limited to that space where it isn't as much of an eye-sore...like the doors. The doors are just nice sleek stainless. :-) Love my fridge.

I love the wood railings. My condo complex has walnut railings that are very similar to the last photo, except ours go from the upper railing (narrow squared posts with a large board for a hand rail...approximately 6" high by 1.5" wide) all the way to the floor of the first floor. It is a really neat effect. This is from 1975. It looks warmer than metal, but still gives the overall mid-century feel. Here's a photo from my entry hall... link

My mother would never let me do this, although I wanted to. I was left with a 2'x3' bulletin board to cover with photos. The "movie star" collage only lasted about a year and a half in junior high. After that it was all art and photography.

I painted my vanity that looks almost exactly like yours (it has one long false panel, not one long one short). I just painted the fronts and the face frame and left the side white. I really like the effect. Not quite as overpowering as painting it all black. Just make sure to prep the surface properly so the paint actually adheres.

Imagine working at The Great Indoors. I hear those beeps all the time. French door refrigerators are the worst. They are almost always the culprits.

My husband and I do laundry seperately most of the time as I'm allergic to tide and we got a LOT of it from my parents (so he uses it for now). I use cold on all my clothes to save on electricity since my clother are never THAT dirty anyways. Depending on how long I've procrastinated, it can range from everything in one load to whites, colors, reds. I will wash my towels with my clothes (which load depends on the color of the towel). Bedsheets get their own load unless I don't have many whites. I just kind of go with it. Whatever fits in the washer without overstuffing it gets washed as a load.

I think one of the picture frames that "floats" a photo between two pieces of glass would work fantastic, particularly if you have a pass-through or somewhere you could hang it as a sort of wall divider. Then you could admire both sides. May I suggest doing every other card flipped so you get a checker board of fronts and backs? It would make it visually interesting even more so than they already are. What a great find!

Wow. I don't know what to say. Columbus is so much better than this. Wish there were some better house tours from here. I've seen quite a few awesome homes that just get overlooked by all the suburban hoity toities.

@I Love Upstate Yeah, the comments were quite nasty. Not everyone does DIY projects the same. Using a quality material and foam can make for quite an amazing bench. Sad that MargotA from Style at Home had a comment saying just that which got completely overlooked.

I just got my first really large bookshelf (finally convinced the hubby that the books were just dying to get out of the tubs in the basement!) and I am so glad to come across this article. I'm at the beginning phases of organizing. I had a smaller shelf (cheap 2 shelf Sauder) that I had trash picked as a pair (second one is for my husbands books) and I organized by subject with larger books towards the outsides and further down if that makes sense. It worked okay for a shelf that size, but now that I have a full size Billy, I'm really stumped! Will keep an eye on this posting to see what other organizational ideas people have!

Wow, this post came about a week late for me. Our cats have been treating the landing at the bottom of the basement stairs as a litter box for some time now. We'd tried the Woolite pet stain remover (don't use it, it doesn't work!) as well as a few other brands. Part of the problem is cats like to pee in the most akward place...corners. We're having to replace trim and a door frame because of it! It was so bad it got into the concrete and we couldn't even get out the smell with vinegar. We put down vinyl tile (sorry eco-friendlies) mostly because a. it's easy, b. it can handle the leaks our basement is prone to, and c. it makes cleanup easy for repeat visits. We moved the litter to the laundry room and they seem happy now. Hopefully it stays this way. I will make sure to pick up a bottle of cleaner for the future though!

I agree with zoee...hardware and an interesting backsplash will make a huge difference in this kitchen. I honestly like it being all white. An Ikea butcher block counter would look fantastic with it. I agree that the light fixture should be exchanged. Recessed lighting is ideal, but in a pinch track lighting can get a really good look as well. (It's not the huge 1970's cans anymore!) I think those changes will make more of a difference than painting the cabinets alone.

Wish the outlets were changed as well. The yellow-white always looks nasty compared to the nice clean white. It's not that difficult to do, nor expensive and can dramatically change the cleanliness "appearance" of a room.

Simple to do:

1. change outlet covers and the outlets for white...we did this in our condo which had outlets that were grubby and off white and it made a world of difference!

2. Peel and stick tiles on the floor...cheap covering that will make the whole space feel new and clean

3. New hardware for the cabinetry...simple way to change the look of the space.

4. Paint the walls and soffits...it will add contrast and interest. Depending on what color you choose you can even visually alter the color your cabinetry appears. My recommendations would be a nice blue-gray (more blue than gray) or perhaps a sagey green. Nice and neutral, but will add some interest to the space. Even a nice tan would look better than the off white.

All this could be done inexpensively. Another idea that I just thought of is black soffits and walls with black hardware on the doors. That would be sharp as well.

Lots of potential. Be glad you have slab style doors to work with. Working with veneer paneled and raised paneled doors is a little bit more complicated to "update" and personalize.
