I always paint the trim first. I am not careful at all, and purposefully paint a little onto the wall. When that I dries I come back and cut in as described. You will find it much easier to cut in and cover the lighter color paint with a darker color when cutting in. It is also easier to be more exacting on the generous flat surface of the wall, rather than having to be careful on the edge of trim to not get the trim paint back on the wall. You are really overlapping the wall color on the trim paint that has gone beyond the trim, and I get a better result by only having to take my time and cut in once on the wall, rather than twice; on the wall and the trim.
