Methinks most of y'all did not live through the 1970s, because THAT is a chunky, clunky 1970s repro thing, right down to the knotty pine and the stain color. Nothing to save there -- painting/distressing that puppy was the way to go. I live in an old house, and lots of the hinges have ended up painted over the years, so painting (and, I note, distressing) them is part of a certain vintage look (although I'm slowly stripping my painted hinges). I like it.

It's possible some of the negativity here may be in part blowback on AT's recent post about...negativity.

With so many self-congratulatory before-and-afters on the interwebz along the lines of "After much research, I turned the lampshade upside down and...TA-DA!", it is mega-refreshing to see something that is a real transformation. Reuse, imagination, problem-solving, functionality, awesome!

The 3 Most Worthwhile Real Life Home Upgrades

mdorothy has a great point. We live in a neighborhood where lots of people bought during the crazy boom, but then didn't have the spare time, skills or money to maintain the property. The gov't is big on that be-a-homeowner propaganda, but there are lots of reasons (including good financial ones) to rent.

Aside from that (and assuming you go ahead), one thing I don't think I've seen yet is that you should budget for STUFF. You need enough cash to cover buying a mower, tools, bins, laundry baskets, light bulbs, etc., etc., as well as the inevitable sudden repair that will be required within a month of moving in. I had to borrow a lawnmower for the first summer I owned my home because I was skint after paying to fix some leaking gas lines (which the seller should have done -- long story, but the upside is the house didn't blow up).

This looks a bit like a scaled-down version of the core of the British Library. It's hard to get a picture of it, but the center of the building is a distinct structure with the books, with all the common areas and so forth surrounding it. http://www.librarystudentjournal.org/index.php/lsj/article/viewFile/62/157/525

@ archinerd: we play that very game at our place! It also works with "open floor plan" and variations on "I love how the windows bring in the light!" (versus how the walls do, presumably!).

Is the wall of bookshelves built around a closed chimney breast? I like the furniture choice in the middle, and wondered if that was a (highly successful) workaround for a former fireplace.

The whole thing is lovely, and it's making me homesick!

New drinking game: everybody drink when someone posts that kitchen cabinets should be painted. Last one conscious has to buy the paint!

(I'm fine with painting cabinets, btw -- I'm just funnin' here.)

There should be a Pink Bathroom Survivors' Club! Ours was in terrible shape so we gutted it, but would have refinished if there hadn't been so many problems. Looks good.
