Thanks so much for the kind comments! Charlie knows I love AT and decided to submit these photos a while back, so I was surprised when he told me the girls' room was up here! We are very lucky Charlie is so handy and thrifty. He really did do a lot of the work himself. I wanted to share a more "updated" photo of the room. We have this "problem" with changing things around...so Charlie found this awesome 1930s vanity for free! He refinished it and now it's in the room instead of the long cabinet. The we got an inexpensive Ikea pine dresser for clothes and some of their toys and another dresser is in their closet.

I want one for myself! :) This is awesome! Play ktichens were my favorite to play with as a little kid and I agree with the above comments and that there is nothing negative with girls playing kitchen. Boys play kitchen too, as my son loves his big sister's pink kitchen!

I wish AT would disable comments and instead just have "LIKE" buttons, or LOVE for that matter. I LOVE this.

Hmmm, I just checked it out for the first time and asked for an invite...but I'm not sure how much I would use it. I found it to be very overwhelming after checking it out for only 15 minutes. I think it's great to share and get ideas, but sometimes too much stuff can clutter my own creativity.

First off, my husband made the pot pie last night and it was the most awesome thing he's made for me so far!! YUM! Thank you for posting this recipe!

On another note, I am vegan and in the kale gratin recipe and chickpea recipe it does state for vegan substitution. They are both easy enough substitutions. I have no problem with that. Again, why are people so nit picky on here (AT community in general)? If you don't like how it's written, or whatever gripe you have, why not just email them directly instead of leaving negative comments for everyone to see?

I agree with Girl in the Cupboard. If it works for them yay! I think it looks great. I love AT and what they showcase, and even if at times I don't like some things, then I don't comment. Why bother? Didn't your mother teach you that if you don't have something nice to say, then don't say it at all?

I love the aesthetics of this room and it looks like the family has arranged everything to fit their functionality.

@Larrissas-I really like what you had to say. I think learning from other cultures is very enriching and rewarding. There is no one way to do things. Every family is different and I tire of hearing judgement based criticism as opposed to constructive criticism on this site. I don't understand why some people are so overly critical. If you don't like it or it doesn't work for you family fine, but that doesn't mean it doesn't work for someone else.

As an artist (and mother) I find this room absolutely beautiful. I'm sure their child just loves this room.

@kushkush
I'm thinking it probably looks similar to other homes since most bungalows have very similar layouts. There are tons of bungalows and craftsmans in Portland, NW, and northern CA and most of them have the same features. They are my favortie!

Love everything about this home!

I also live in Portland and last year we had a terrible invasion of slugs. We did EVERYTHING listed here!....copper, beer, sluggo...after using a combination of all the things, the slugs were gone! I think the Sluggo definitely worked best. I also hear lite beer is more favored by slugs and that coffee grinds are not liked by slugs, but we haven't tried that yet though.

Do we have better things to do, like perhaps parenting, than be critical of how other people parent? Just saying.

Etiquette, Manners and Just Being a Good Person

Wow. What a lot of comments...it is sad that we have to identify ourselves with our own morals and ethics and can't see outside of our own perspective. We raise our children to be tolerant and compassionate, yet as adults we usually are so far from that.

I would be what some people consider "progressive" (vegan, extended breastfeeding, done cloth diapers, etc) yet I would never openly judge my friend on those matters even if I didn't agree with her. Why is it that we feel the need to judge and be competitve with one another? We each have our own ideals and values. Who is to say what is "right?"

Also I thought this was a design site? I am kind of new to the community still, but are posts like these typical? It's just a bit strange to me, that's all.

My husband and I are both artists as well and I think keeping and displaying kids' art is an absolute must! Obviously you don't need to keep everything, but kids love looking back at what they have made. We keep a binder for each of our children and add to it what we like the most (but having them pick it out is a good idea too). I use a string with clips to hang their art in my craft room.

Art is not only about the process for children but also for them to see and feel a sense of accomplishment. I teach art to middle school kids and they absolutely love seeing their work around the halls, as my kids love seeing their work in our house.

oh i just did this yesterday! my kids LOVE it! the cornstarch and water is totally safe for kids...it's all edible. my 2 yr old put it in his mouth and if your child is like mine, will most likely not eat it anymore because it doesn't taste good. :) not only do the kids have fun, but my husband and i do as well! it is easy to clean up off the floor with a wet rag too.

That is awesome! I am glad other people keep their old childhood toys and "security" items. I have an old pillow and teddy bear that I have had since I was little. I have now passed them onto my daughter and she loves them, especially the pillow, dearly. My pillow was my "buddy" in all times of need and that is what it has become for my 5 year old. I don't think it is bad at all, but her father and my boyfriend think it is not good. They think it's gross and that she should not carry around and be attached to a pillow. I have tried to make a new pillow but she loves my old one. Obviously I have washed it many times! Do any of you let your kids play with your old toys?

Research tells us that young children learn best from their surroundings. When I taught younger children, my classroom was full of print, colors, their work, and other various supplies. I love having my home organized, but children need to see things "out." It helps them to learn and also remember, "hey there are those puzzles!" When I tuck things away too much, my children forget about those toys and games. I love what I see here on this website. I think most rooms shown here are well balanced. Too much of anything isn't good...so too minimalist, I think is not always going to foster an enriching and warm learning environment for children.
