I like having guests. I bought a home that's too large for my family, so I delight in parties and sharing my space with others on a temporary basis. I offer the guests my bedroom and the attached bath, and I sleep on the futon in the guest bedroom.

Thorndale, I appreciate your comments. I have my boyfriend's parents coming to stay for a night this week, even though my boyfriend won't be here.

Reality Check: Do You Really Like Having Overnight Guests

Yeah, without tearing down the wall, it's going to be hard to make this look like one room. I'd say to do a formal living room in one space, and a play/exercise room in the other.

You could make the area under the stairs the kids' nook. Kids aren't tall and wouldn't miss the overhead space, but on the other hand having kids' toys there might be a cluttery mess that you see when you walk in the door every day.

I also thought it was a good idea to hang a curtain to hide a corner that you use as storage.

If you used the front room as the living room, maybe you could angle the couch so when you're sitting on it you can easily see into the play room.

I agree that the brick and the porch could somehow be highlighted and that entryway brightened up a bit.

The two shrubs in front block the view of the porch and I would consider moving them somewhere else on the property and planting low flowers in front.

I like the idea of painting the wrought-iron railings white, or a lighter color, and adding lighter patio furniture.

Could the ceiling of the porch (and maybe the fascia) be painted a lighter color to help reflect light instead of absorb it? I'd probably try to photoshop some other colors for that fascia to see how that would look.

You have a beautiful, stately home.

I agree your question is kind of broad. In general, though ...

Find the features of the apartment you love the most, and find ways to accentuate them.

Pay attention to "flow" ... where your eyes and body naturally go when you enter a room, and find ways to work with that.

I agree that a good solid cleaning and fixing anything in disrepair would help you understand what you have to work with.

It sounds like the space may be a little cramped? If it is, make use of vertical space - put up some high shelves to store lesser used items, hang things (lamps, plants) from the ceiling, etc.

I live in a tall-people household. We had a couch that was too low (but oh-so-cute), so we put it on bed risers. I'm sure it looked tacky, but it was more comfortable for all of us to use.

I agree wholeheartedly with preserving family relationship and going directly to the landlord/relative with the mistake. If you are reasonable and honest, there's a better chance he will be too.

Actually, if space in the freezer isn't a concern, it's a good idea to store frozen containers of water, to help the refrigerator run more smoothly. I usually water plants with my leftover pasta water, or I dump it in the compost pile.

Not creepy at all! Way grosser to use animal hide.

I think it's a perfect solution for the hordes of stuffed animals sitting in bags in the basement. What else would you do with them, if not repurpose? Some thrift places won't take them because they can be carriers of small pests (fleas, etc).

I am a onebag.com convert as well! I also carry a bag that folds up, in case I end up flying back with more than I left with.

My best tip is to bring clothes that all coordinate with each other - more outfits with fewer pieces.

I have successfully arranged my furniture as Fire Wife Katie describes: the back of the couch and table backed up against each other, floating in the center of the room.

I also like the idea of flipping the couch with whatever is on the opposite wall - entertainment center?

I would really love to see a surface covered in a foreign coin collection! That would probably render the "defacing American currency" law invalid.

The only thing I can see being an issue for resale is if it's ever a HUD home or something, the city could get involved and they might say something about it. On the other hand, if coin becomes obsolete, what a quaint gem it would be to buy a home with a coin floor.

I used to live in a home with a small walk-through room that attached the bathroom to the bedroom. The bedroom had a tiny closet, so I used the walk-through room as a dressing room. I added a portable hanging rack for extra closet space, had a small desk and make-up mirror, and I hung jewelry on the wall. I enjoyed seeing all my clothes, jewelry, scarves, shoes, and purses in one glance. It made it so much easier to pull together outfits!

My new house doesn't have a set-up like that, so I'm back to a traditional closet and I miss that space!

My town does not recycle these, either. I use them to bring cold dishes to work, and throw them away there. I live alone but love to cook, so I often pack up these with food and give them to others. I used up a bunch when I way over-bought on birthday cake for a party ... sent everybody home with a container or two of cake!

I am a 6' tall female, and my son is 6'7". We lived in a small arts and crafts home where my son had to duck through the doorways. Purchasing a bi-level split is a treat, as we both appreciate the vertical space.

I just bought a house, too! I have mystery light switches, and I realized that a very bright light shines directly into the master bedroom all night long. Finding out what rooms get hot, which stay the coolest all day, which have direct sunlight at what times of the day, how to evenly distribute the central air, etc. I find it exciting, time consuming, and annoying all at once.

I purchased a mild fixer-upper, and I am a first-time homebuyer. When an exterior light fixture stopped working, I realized that I can't just call the landlord but have to troubleshoot the issue myself!

Oddly, I feel a few pangs of sadness leaving behind my tiny old rental on a busy street in a lower-middle-class neighborhood. I was there ten years, and now I live in a beautiful, much newer house next to a field in an upper-middle class neighborhood.

Wind Whistler - when I was in a battered women's shelter (about as dignified as a homeless shelter), I was thrilled to get a set of good, used sheets. I was able to take them with me when I moved into my own place, and I used them for years after that. Good-quality used sheets are NOT degrading.
