Hemp curtains are an excellent option, as it's a natural material & the weave is so tight you don't need a liner. After your shower, all you do is wring out the excess water & let it drip dry inside the tub. It's pricey, around $90, but they last a long time.

Toasted leftover pane de casa, smooth peanut butter, black & blue jam (blackberry-blueberry). Fresh challah (slices or buns) with smooth peanut butter & thinly sliced Granny Smith apple. Chia flax bread with chunky peanut butter & lavender honey (my granddaughter's favourite). Any stale bread, toasted, with smooth peanut butter & mashed ripe banana. All with icy cold milk, of course!

@middleisgold: I share your pain: when I was 10 my mother redecorated our house. I was allowed to choose my decor: I opted for white walls with wallpaper on the wall behind the bed, a white background with black & silver scrollwork bird cages. I came home from school the day the painters were there to discover that my mother had painted my entire room pastel pink because she decided she didn't like the wallpaper. I lived in that room for 8 years. To this day (I'm now in my 60s!) I cannot stand the colour pink anywhere but in fresh flowers.

@threechordme: If all you're seeing at St Lawrence is the 'meat fest', you haven't explored it thoroughly. The south Market has a huge bulk store in the lower level (Domino's), Kitchen Place sells kitchen wares, there are bakeries upstairs & down, at least 2 giant cheese shops, several fishmongers, restaurants, jewellery stands & single-product stands (Honey World, Kozlick's Mustards, Lily's Teas, bulk pasta, coffee beans roasted while you wait, rice from around the world), as well as several greengrocers. Farmers take over the north Market on Saturdays with local produce indoors & out. There's a maple syrup seller who's been there, rain, snow or shine every Saturday for over 20 years (best I've ever tasted). On Sundays the north Market becomes a flea market. Give St Lawrence another try; there must be some reason it's in the number one spot on the list. Oh, and check out their website: http://www.stlawrencemarket.com/

We live in Toronto in a gracious downtown neighbourhood of large Edwardian homes (the Annex). A couple of yrs ago a small-but-lovely corner home was sold. The new owners torn down the house & built what can only be described as a 3-storey shoebox. Not only does it tower over its neighbour blocking the light, but that side of the house is painted black & has no windows at all. The 'landscaping' consists of little shrubs around the walls. Period. The backyard is just stacked concrete shapes, next to a garage that looks like a miniature blockhouse. We call it the 'spite' house.

We bought these chairs in white to go around a vintage beechwood farmers table:

I think any variation on this shape & colour would work well.

'--- porn' is a shorthand expression commonly used to denote styled photos that are visually exciting ('food porn', 'garden porn', etc). Let it go & just enjoy the pretty pictures. Jeez.

Ha! On a visit to my son's home I offered to cook dinner & almost took off the top of my index finger: he was using knives that he'd inherited from my dad about 20 years ago & had never sharpened. Since he said he wasn't planning to get them sharpened I bought him a ceramic knife. Not the best knife ever, but at least I don't have to worry about him losing a finger to a blunt blade.

There's also a cherry flavour, although I've only seen in it in one supermarket here (Metro in Toronto).

If the chip's on the underside of the plate, I'll keep it. Bowls that crack or chip get smashed for potting shards. For me, it's not about safety, it's about esthetics.

I like to use dried pears. Dip one half in white or dark chocolate, then drizzle the contrasting chocolate over the whole piece. This also works well with dried pineapple rings (try to buy the smaller ones).

Not sure where I got this recipe, but it is so delicious! Very rich, so a small serving goes a long way.

2 tbsp olive oil
8 oz bacon, chopped
1 pound Brussels sprouts, stems trimmed
1 cup dried figs, stemmed & quartered
¼ cup water
Salt to taste
4 tsp balsamic vinegar

Put a large skillet over medium heat & add oil, then bacon. Cook, stirring occasionally, until it starts to crisp, 5-8 minutes. Meanwhile, put sprouts through feed tube of food processor equipped with slicing attachment.

Add sprouts, figs & water to pan; sprinkle with salt, turn heat to medium; cook, undisturbed, until sprouts & figs are nearly tender, about 5-10 minutes. Turn heat to medium-high & cook, stirring occasionally, until any remaining water evaporates, another 5-10 minutes. Add vinegar, taste, adjust seasoning & serve.

Serves 4.
