+1 for those locks being really dangerous. My grandma was visiting a relative's house that caught on fire. The relative kept the key on the doorway directly above the door. My grandma didn't know and therefore barely got out of the house alive. She spent three months in a burn center. You may know where the key is, but will your guests?

I'm really curious about these purple peas now! Has anybody seen them in farmer's markets in more northern locales? I'm in DC.

Spicy peanut sauce has red curry paste in it. Has anybody tried to do a tofu satay? I think peanut sauce would also be good for dipping raw or roasted veggies. I have Nancy McDermott's Real Thai cookbook, and it is excellent. She has a vegetarian version, which I have not cooked from. It might be a good source of ideas for vegetarian uses for curry pastes.

The second one is interesting. I could see doing something like that in a San Francisco Victorian kitchen. But on the whole, these kitchens are gag-inducing. They are way too big. And I also suspect a kitchen like these would see less cooking than my relative hovel. But hey, these people need some cabinet and counter space for all their Williams Sonoma Gadgets, right?

I have fringe on two blankets, a beautiful alpaca geometric print one that my husband bought on a college trip in Peru, and a bright orange and green cotton blanket on my bed that we bought at Fab India. I don't think of myself as a fringe-lover but I think the fringe works well on both blankets. (I'm not sure I like that Burberry blanket, but I think it's the plaid turning me off, rather than the fringe).

If you know the weight of the bag, will the grocer tare it for you? Paying an extra .9 oz would add up if you were buying something expensive. That's about 60¢ if the item is $9.99/lb, which is not unheard of if you are buying nuts or dried fruit.

Have:

Electric Kettle (another big tea drinker)
Kitchen Aid Mixer
Slow Cooker (for beans!)

In Dire Need of:
Food Processor

With much debate, decided to do without:
Microwave
Toaster Oven

My kitchen is way too small to house the appliances I used to have. But not having a microwave or toaster has taught me how great toast from a cast iron skillet is, and how easy and tasty stovetop popcorn can be.

I have found that the glasslock containers sold by a few different companies seal pretty well. They are a bit heavy for commuting, but not too bad.

This method is similar to the directions on the back of the Safeway store brand kernels that I have. I just made popcorn on the stove for the first time a few days ago and could not believe how easy it was. I used olive oil for the oil and was surprised that the popcorn actually tasted buttery more than olive oily. I am probably going to do this all the time now. It's a great reasonably healthy snack.

Any suggestions for a cheap formica countertop that is white? Everything stains it. I have tried natural scouring cleaners (Bar Keeper's Friend and something like that made by Mrs. Meyers), but it does not work well on the stains unless I practically rub the counter away. I also tried lemon juice. The only think I've had success with, unfortunately, is bleach, but I hate using it.

Where are those carrot vending machines? I grew up in Bakersfield, CA. My high school was a test site for Surge Cola, so we were inundated with vending machines selling 25¢ diabetes-in-a-can. Bakersfield, CA also happens to be where almost every baby carrot sold in the US is manufactured. I am crossing my fingers that these baby carrot vending machines are at a high school in my hometown. I'm sure they're not...but I would be very happy if they were.

There is a recipe for this is Gourmet Today! Here's a link to what I believe to be the same recipe: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Tuna-Noodle-Casserole-109434

I really wanted to make Tuna Casserole earlier this year but then it got too hot. I'm going to try it this fall. Cooks Illustrated also has a great recipe for Green Bean Casserole, minus the condensed soup, that I made last Thanksgiving.

Initial thought before reading the suggestions: "Maybe I can figure out how to repel the little flies that seem to swarm around my mint plant!"

I don't know if the crushed mint suggestion is going to work on my flies. Out of all the herbs, they seem to love the mint and only the mint.
