I hope to see them back in a short time - baby #2 is due in 4 months - would be nice to have matching cribs.

Anyone knows who makes/sales those horse/llama/donkeytoys? Saw one in "Babies The Movie" and it looks awesome, but cannot find it anywhere.... :/

You could also try venetian plaster in gray shades. I remember watching my mom do it first time in our hallway, and it turned out great. She went for the Tuscan effect (orange/yellow/muddy application), but picking industrial colors and going for smooth, wet concrete look should give great results.

I agree on practicing before, tho. I did a faux treatment of my bathroom walls and I'm really happy I practiced... behind the kitchen range first! ;)

Well, getting a slab of marble cut to size can be pricey. Not a big fan of tiled vanities (but I had to rip one out of my bath and hated it oh-so-much, so I may be prejudiced), but I'm wondering if leaving wood top would work?

I have one more bathroom to go, and it has a pedestal sink in now, which means almost no space for storage in the bathroom. I don't like the cheaper HomeDepot/Lowes vanities and have no place in reno budget left for a nicer one, so I wad considering finding a piece of furniture to refinish as vanity. Is leaving the top wooden a bad idea?

I'd prime and cover it with high gloss lack, but not sure about wear and tear on such surface...

My pug (pugs are not dogs...) gets everywhere, including our dinning table to eat the outside of a lone burrito left there to cool before moving it to the fridge.

The only place she stays off is a fabric sofa in our office (she spends her whole days in front of the sofa, on a little ottoman, or on a lil chair next to me), but sofa is a no-no from the moment we got it. "BAD DOG" and a few guilt trips seemed to work.

lol... I have 55 days to go and like 4 more projects to finish. I so agree with the tips. I didn't put my longer gloves on once - got allergic reaction from plant touching my skin (never happened before). Didn't wear safety glasses once - ended up with a piece of polyurethane molding in my eye. I don't blame it all on pregnancy, but...

My favorite - take is easy. For real. If I go on high gear for 2 days, I get all achy and have to be on bed rest for the next two days. Feeling like I'm going to have the baby NOW.

So go slowly, rest a lot and you'll be fine.

PS. Stay away from anything including chemicals in the first 3-4 months.

Not a big fan of cleaning, but I implemented "wash as you cook" recently, and I am so proud of myself... The dishes ARE done before the meal leaved the kitchen (maybe except one or two). Then, after dinner it's just plates to the dishwasher and quick wash of the pan/pot that was already soaking in water for 20 minutes. Breeze.

I like the creamy color. Everything depends on what you put around it. You can try white wash, too. That should leave a little of natural look to it.

Should I Paint the Stone Fireplace White? Good Questions | Apartment Therapy Los Angeles
5/6/10 9:16 AM

I'll break my post up a little bit:

Cabinets - good suggestion by Kimmie - hardware makes all the difference. I would consider painting my kitchen cabinets white, but I just love the creamy white look. If you like yours - keep them this way.

Backsplash - I tiled mine and love the easy cleanup. I'd also suggest subway style, but maybe in some classic finish - light stone look would work great with the wood. If you don't want to spend too much on the real stuff, porcelain and ceramic tiles look pretty good these days and are easier to maintain.

Walls - my parents have similar color of cabinets and I talked them into olive green. Worked great. I also like wood / soft yellow combination. Not too bright and not with orange undertones. Mustard and honey colors would be my choice.

Counters - if you are decided on the white ones, I would get them first and then try sampling backsplash and wall color around them. I have bright white laminate and quite hate it. It's not the newest one, so maybe that's why it stains so easily, but I'd have to treat it with bleach bath every few days to keep them in a decent shape. Everything from red wine and tomato sauce, to sunny-d and cucumber will leave marks. If you want laminate - go for some neutral color or stone lighter look. If you want to spruce up - maybe it's worth investing in stone counters?

Appliances - I'd get stainless. I know it may be a trend, but stainless just looks better with this type of wood. And if you want to modernize - stainless definitely helps. I think black would look better than white in this kitchen, too, but I'm not against white appliances, especially with while cabinets.

Good luck with your new place!

@Karen - I may have exactly the same sander you mentioned, but getting all the finish from the steps still takes ages, and the clean surface is very uneven. I will stick to paint.

Darker primer - check. Maybe I will even start with a coat of black - at least around the edges, so when it chips or scratches, I'd get a cool worn effect.

Just realized we're leaving for a few days in a couple of weeks, so I could prime this week with the half/half method (I tested the "skip-a-step method - definitely not for me), maybe apply one coat, and then paint the whole thing just before leaving. That could make the end result more even.

I know I need to re-paint the risers. ;) This time I'll use paint with a sheen, so I can actually wash it when it gets dirty again.

Just tried sanding the planks - no way I'd get it down to bare wood - so I guess stain is out. I'm also more worried about inhaling with the created dust than paint toxicity... Yes, I do own a mask.

I cannot use laminate over the existing floor, because they don't make stair planks, laminate is quite thick and it's just over my DIY skills.

I do like the BM Black Bean color (or at least the samples/pictures I found on the Internet), but is it a cold or warm brown? Hard to say checking on the computer screen.

Here are some color samples, and I like all 4 at the bottom. Maybe something lighter would be an option, too - "stone", "copley gray". (http://media.benjaminmoore.com/WebServices/prod/PDFS/VinylSidingDollops_final.pdf)

Had to cross out red and navy... They would not match anything else in the house...

Thank you for the advice!

I truly hate the yellow pine. Same wood was in the hallway and even though we changed to laminate (sounds like downgrading), the pine was easy to chip, dent, scratch, stain - you name it.

I love the idea of a runner, but cannot stretch my spring renovation budget anymore. I still need new carpet in 2 bedrooms and have the same laminate placed in the hallway upstairs.

I have some old pine planks left and can try to match the stain on those, I'll look into deck stains, too - I should have a little catalog with colors somewhere.

There are two things I forgot to mention:

- We use the stairs to get to our bedrooms... What's the typical drying time for stained and painted floors? Should I paint every second one and finish the rest after some time? How to deal with this issue...

- I am 7 months pregnant, and would prefer not to sniff on oil based products or stains. Is latex paint an option here, or should I just forget my paintbrush-control-freak issues here and stick with oil?

Thanks again, this is one of two last "bigger" projects I have to deal with in next two weeks, so I really appreciate all the input. :)

Marty

Love it! Wish I had a window in my lil kitchen. But to get anywhere close to your results I'd have to gut it out, redo plumbing in half the house and add my dream window. :)

I'd add a simple mantel. Constructing something should not be a big deal - most molding companies have little booklets on how to build up molding in different ways. All it takes is 3 pieces of wood and some trim.

I do think it is smart to consider the resale value when deciding on kitchen or bath renovation. You can do whatever you want with painted surfaces, replacing the floors is typically not a big deal, same back-splashes, etc, but the bones (cabinets) are painful to change.

What I learned about open shelving is don't do it in a tiny kitchen that has issues with ventilation. I removed doors from all upper cabinets last Fall to repaint and reinstall them within a week. They're stuck in the garage since then, because I like the look.

My kitchen has no windows, no vent going outside, so I cannot boil water for my tea without steam getting onto the closest dishes. I need to re-wash all the glass dishes before using them, as they are all covered with a fatty film every time I cook, and I cook often. So I'm putting the doors back, and will keep an open shelf for display only, and maybe cut a couple of other doors for easy access to plates and mugs.

Go for open shelving if your kitchen is well vented, you can install doors without a great hustle, and if they are away from your range.

I think the comment on "who would make a home made stuff" reflects a part of the article nicely: "he delicate French croissants, the decidedly oversized American muffins, the gaudy danishes". Not sure muffins are American invention (tho I bet the oversized, oversweetened are), but most of the labor intensive pastries are definitely not American... I'm not against buying semi-finished products if you go for less work, but there is no way you get the taste/texture with store bought pastry... unless you can buy it from a bakery.

Ekhm... bigos is not an Easter dish at all. :)

I don't think I ever had bigos with garlic, too. But there are so many modifications to the recipe that basically every family has it's own version. I love it with seared pork and chunky bacon (back fat is just too hard-core for me). Sausage is not my favorite, and I prefer the version without tomatoes or wine. Also, at least for me, the more sour the better, but you may tone it down with fresh cabbage.

You definitely need sourdough bread with it. And don't forget it'll send you running for the toilet if you're not used to eating boiled sauerkraut in large, or any, quantities.

I have same problem - with a small wooden mantel/shelf I hate. I got used to the fireplace, tho it looked odd to me at the begining. Need to give it a scrub this spring and it looks good. Dying to redo the mantel to something substantial (probably in white to match the molding).

If you really hate it, tear it down and replace with the stand alone one like: http://nagrzewnice-sklep.pl/files/Image/kominki/Koza_K4%20mako%20maly.jpg
