We moved both kids to twin beds with low profile frames and side rails at 12 months and had no trouble. Neither could open their bedroom doors so wandering the house and baby-proofing wasn't an issue. I'd say that unless you're going to keep the first one in the crib for a LONG time or have a ton of disposable income, don't waste the money on a second crib. My husband and I are both fairly tall and didn't even think to look for a crib better suited to our heights. While it may have been nice for the first few months, it may have created some pretty substantial hazards when our son started climbing out of the (fully lowered) crib at 10 months. We use a twin duvet w/ cover (which I made) for both kids. No top sheet. My children both thrash around at night;We haven't had a problem with the duvet bunching up in the cover.
