When you're in Kansas City, you should try to get to Harry Epstein's (http://store.harryepstein.com/). It's a hardware/surplus store that is a magical wonderland of tiny hammers and Czech two-way telephones and castiron cookware and a million things to get your project-y juices flowing.

A friend of my painted a small room in her house a tangy aqua. After commenting that it felt like she was at the bottom of a pool, she repainted with the paint one tone down on the color strip and got the effect she wanted.

One more time -- it's not regular spray paint, it's fabric spray paint. It's designed to paint fabric -- apholstery, clothing, etc. It's ASTM non-toxic and they use it in children's art classes.

Here's a link to an example paint:

I swear by Mrs. Pegg's. I can set it up on the patio in the summer and bring it inside when it's raining. During the winter, I have to run a humidifier anyway, so it's a win-win.

We get these all the time, too, but they just hang out on the screens. They don't really come into the house. It might be worth your while to figure out how to open and close the windows without taking down the screens. Or maybe using a finer mesh, like cheesecloth.

The K-State extension site recommends:

Recommendations:
Psyllid control indoors:

A vacuum cleaner with hose attachment may be used to remove invading psyllids. A
space spray may be applied using a household aerosol labeled for flying insects. Use
a product containing synergized pyrethrins or one of the pyrethroids (various names,
but they usually end with -thrin). Note, not all aerosols are intended for flying-insect
control. Read and follow label directions closely.

Preventing entry:
Several steps can be taken during the fall just before frost to reduce entry. Turning off
outdoor night-lights and reducing the amount of light shining through night windows
helps. Consider using fine mesh (18) screens on windows that are kept open. Ordinary
screens are 12 mesh to the inch. Caulk or plug up cracks and crevices. Keep windows
and doors closed when psyllids are active. For temporary reduction, spray exterior
surfaces such as window screens, shutters and sides of buildings where psyllids are
resting. Look for residual insect sprays labeled to use on outdoor surfaces. Examples
of ingredients with residual action include cyfluthrin, bifenthrin, permethrin, Baygon and
tralomethrin.

Based on the description of the views and the precipitous drop, I think this is probably somewhere on one of the Turkey Creek bluffs. We're on the same line of bluffs, but further east. It is the best combination of urban and rural of any area in KC. Positively Appalachian when you get down in the holler, but I can still walk to excellent sushi. Building on the bluff is a challenge, though.

Have you been to Harry Epstein? I checked it out a couple of weeks ago for the first time and I was floored.

The first thing you see, right by the door, is a huge selection of Lodge pre-seasoned cast iron. Along with enameled mess kit (spit sink?) bowls from East Germany. A million tools and weird grommets and hooks and everything you would ever need to outfit your bomb shelter. The best find was all the crank two-way phones from Czechoslovakia that you could use to wire your whole house.

Go there!

My mom made an excellent kitchen island topped with some of the oak panelling they salvaged when they knocked down part of a wall in the den. The oak was the countertop on the island, the bottom was some stock cabinets on casters. I'm not sure how the panelling was notched together (glued together), but she also included a cool little hinged leaf.

Seriously, when I have to buy a non-rechargeable battery (usually for a camera when I am stuck in the field), I use it until I get the battery warning. Then it gets passed along to the remote control, the battery backup for my alarm clock, etc. You can get a lot of use out of batteries that are "dead" for one purpose.

Please also consider all the ancillary environmental costs such as shipping, maintenance/replacement, and cleaning/sealing.

We considered recycled glass countertops in our kitchen, then found out that they had to be shipped from New Jersey, where they are manufactured, to Kansas City. The cost of shipping actually was greater than the cost of the counters. Ultimately, we went with durable stock countertops that were already here and that would be durable (not need replacement) and low maintenance (don't need much in the way of chemical cleaners or sealants).
