well, turmeric cannot be substituted for saffron since they both are unique and have different fragrance & taste. Turmeric has to be used in moderation - a few pinches. It has been used in Ayurveda. We as Hindus, rub turmeric on our new clothing on Tamil new year's day. In a household it serves as an antibiotic as well. Here's what I made: I learned this from my mother. Kanji is good for breakfast, lunch or dinner. If you're making it for lunch serve it with coconut sambol & papadam (thin rice wafers deep fried or cooked on the flame). If you can't get fresh coconut milk use canned.
