If you inherit furniture that is not your style, sell it.

Exception to this, I think, is if you inherit something you don't like but your kid seems to like. Why not, then.

Really late, but one option I'm tempted to put out there every time this sort of question comes up is the sactional. I don't think there's another option that is as convenient as far as moving and rearranging goes (not that "is it easy to move to my current/next place?" is necessarily the number one priority one would have in buying furniture). It is not the most aesthetic option, but it has a clean look and you can always invest in throws/pillows to dress it up. There is a wide variety of cover options, some of which will place the components for a loveseat out of your range, I think. Issues of course include if it's actually comfortable to you (but that goes with any couch), although I guess some people may not like a wholly flat seating surface on their couches (???) either. Though I think it's nice that if you tire of it as a loveseat, you can break it apart and use it as a chair+ottoman, or two chairs, for example.

It comes in a slightly larger (6) and slightly smaller (5) series, though... it seems possible that anything with actual covers might be out of your range already. orz Well, the series 5 (base is 31"x26", so with two bases you can either have a loveseat 62in wide and 26in deep or 52in wide and 31in deep) is a little cheaper but might have slightly fewer cover options (on the website); for black leather a loveseat would be.... $1600; chocolate/seawater/taupe rhinoplush or grey tweed $1400; cranberry tweed $1600.

I really like the footprint art. XD And the shelves in the bathroom are pretty great!

Well, for me, the thing is that I have only 1 knife worth the angst. XD (I only have 2 knives at all!) So I'd feel dumb shipping just this one knife to be sharpened; I would prefer to be able to have it sharpened somewhere I would normally go anyway . I guess I'd also be nervous about sending off my <s>samurai sword</s>giant knife through the mail.

Haven't read the comments yet, but....

You were able to resell the mid-C desk for what you bought it for because it was vintage/used. It's not like you're ever going to be able to recoup the costs of a genuine saarinen tulip table if you bought it new, either (unless you somehow managed to buy it on a deep discount). Ppl aren't going to pay new prices on used items they can buy new themselves.

You "should" buy a KO if you actually like it. If you're already planning to resell it, obviously you don't like it enough. It's good to see things in person, anyway, which was your real problem. If you had seen it in person before buying, maybe you would have gone with a different KO (if this is really a KO) that would have satisfied. Likewise, there are genuine designer furniture pieces that I have seen pictures of online, and then when I had the opportunity to see them in person in DWR or wherever I wound up not liking them as much as I thought I would. The proportions were "wrong", or the finish was not as flattering, in comparison to my imagination.

A breakfast bar eliminates the need for a dining table and keeps the flow of the room open

What makes a "breakfast bar", just being shoved up against a wall? Seems to be a regular-height table with regular-height chairs. But being able to look out the window isn't bad, even if you don't look at whoever might be eating with you.

Minimalism (in a sense) and Ikea done very very very well. That tiny sink makes me cry, though. T.T

I thought the best steel was "blue", followed by "white" and then "yellow". Well, in Japanese, I guess technically the terms are different in english. I need to figure out how to sharpen my (japanese) knife, though... I'm not sure I can just take it to sur la table, though they do have some of the sharpening stones for sale, so presumably they can sharpen knives with the same process...????.

I agree with SLL78, LalieMod, Dennis N, kgold, etc.

But the article does bury the lead, a bit, since everything about "spending consciously" is in the last third, which is all sensible and applicable stuff... if obvious to everyone but the "furniture is an investment!!" people.

Personally, I buy almost everything second-hand. I live in an area with a decent extended craigslist market. I've only bought a couple big-ticket items new; one I regretted, the other I do a tiny bit, but only because it wasn't the right color. There wasn't a high probability of either showing up used, though (the on I regret more and managed to pull the trigger on selling had a slightly higher probability, actually!) so them's the breaks. The ikea ratio in my apartment could be on the high side, but actually I don't have a single particleboard piece. And being a single person with no kids or pets, I see no reason why it shouldn't all last nearly forever, or at least until I get bored of it. :p

That still means that just about the only furniture that qualifies as an investment is used to start with. Doesn't help any artisans out there.

Maxwell, you did not really need that furniture-maker to tell you about economies of scale. >.>

That said, probably would just go for a brita if my tap water were so bad. (Which it isn't. Yay!)

I hate the look of all of these except the One Night Stand (although I heard it is not so cushy to sleep on) and MC&Co which I definitely wouldn't by at that price point or anything. I mean, it's basically a twin bed with equal-height head and footboards, and then if you put it against a wall and have those big pillow you won't need a back, right? Then it's all on the bedding.
